Quick and painless flight to Charlotte. Now I'm here until 6:15.

On a separate note, has everyone heard about the US Airways flight that got detoured to Maine? I've got to go and see if there were more details but last I heard the cause was "suspicious behavior" by a passenger and the plane was just sitting on the runway in Maine.

Ugh. Arrived in Newark an hour and 20 minutes late. 25 minutes to get to our Rome flight. Keeping fingers crossed.

Yay!! So excited to hear the first of us are arriving. Also happy to hear you are in the room, I was hoping the rooms would be ready when we arrived.

No more updates from Jack so I assume he made his flight connection.

We made it to our flight, being the last ones to board (traffic into Newark was being held for weather delays). I've apologized to Lauren, Jeri, John and Micki (who had to wait on us) for delaying the flight.

We were met at the passport station by an ABD representative who took us, when our bags arrived, to a waiting mercedes suv cab. The ride from the airport was interesting, from the long line for the toilette at the rest area (we didnt stop) to suddenly driving past the Coliseum.

We arrived at the hotel around 10:30 this morning (local time) along with a flight crew or 2 from Dulles. Our rooms were not ready so we struck out individually. This isn't as strange as it might sound. I'm grumpy from the flight so I didnt want to inflict myself on any one except Cathie. As it was, she rightfully barked at me a couple of times to remember to absorb the atmosphere.

We stopped at the bankomat for cash, then on to the Vodaphone store, where there was a small language barrier until I took out my iPad. 25€ for 5 "jigabytes" of data a month. (There is a TIM store in the same block, which likely helped make vodaphone competitive on pricing.)

From there, we walked past the pantheon,

then to Piaza Novona

We ate pizza and minestrone at Tucci, and for an obvious tourist place, the food was very good. We had to stop at Grom for gelato. It didn't disappoint.

The tourists are out in droves. As Karen said, the weather is gorgeous.

Our rooms were ready so we are back here now, absorbing the atmosphere of a fresh shower and lounging clothes.

Heidi and Marco, the ABD guides, slipped a handwritten welcome note under our door. The view from the seventh floor of the hotel is breath taking. I'll get a photo of it later today.

Thanks for the updates everyone!

Can you share with us what to expect at the airport? Did it take long to get your bags and get through immigration/customs?

We had a short wait for the bags but they all arrived. There wasn't customs in the usual sense. Just checking passports (which is done before getting checked bags) and that was very quick, just a stamp, grunt and next. No one checked the contents of our luggage. There wasnt a line for it.

A couple of aeroporto tips. From our terminal (United) we took a "people mover" (I kid you not, I have the photo to prove it) very similar to the ones at OIA. There are 2 tracks, however, both going to the same place. Only a few figured this out as the second PM departed crammed full while he first one was all but empty.

Second, check all the passport lines to see which ones are open. There is a structure that prevented us from initally seeing an open passport line. It went pretty quick.

Enjoy the ride in.

I'm at the airport, enjoying a breakfast snack of a cheddar bacon strata, ready to lift out of misty Seattle and get on my way to the fabulousness of seeing all of you in Rome!

Happy trails, all!

Looking forward to joining the Philadelphia contingent in just a few hours.

Thanks for the pictures!!
