Question:

There are a number of driving records that have been established on this thread (see Page 1). However, whether it takes you days or a single "straight-through" drive to get to WDW, what is the longest you've ever driven before you had to make a stop?

A little over three hours for me. [Legs needed to be stretched.]

All the best.

7 hours. Kids were asleep. Stopped for gas and put the cruise control on 65 mph. 7 hours later, I needed to stop for gas again .... and go to the bathroom pretty bad.

Better late than never but here are our driving times from our trip last a few weeks ago.

Left PA 11:35pm 9/22
PA/DE border 11:46
DE/MD border 12:05am, stopped for gas in MD
MD/VA border 1:50, stopped for potty break and coffee in VA
VA/NC border 4:52, stopped for gas in NC
NC/SC border 7:37, stopped for breakfast in SC
SC/GA border 11:09
GA/FL border 12:50
Pulled in Saratoga Springs 4:30

Overnight construction was not an issue. Speeds decreased to 45mph in some areas but traffic moved along just fine. We also hit some heavy rain, the worst in GA and FL while on 95 so that slowed us down a bit. Between the rain and some accidents on I-4 we ended up hitting Friday rush hour in Orlando. Annoying but not anywhere near what I'm used to in Philly. Thankfully I was the one driving and didn't get too cranky. I sure was glad when we got off I-4 though. I think we will definitely work to avoid that route during Friday rush hour.

Left Animal Kingdom Lodge at 9:50am on Sat 10/1
FL/GA 12:46
GA/SC 2:18, stopped for dinner and gas in SC
SC/NC 6:58
NC/VA 9:34, I think we stopped for gas in VA
VA/MD 12:40
MD/DE 2:15
DE/PA 2:42
Home 2:55am

Hit some construction in GA, I think, which ate up a good half hour. Also hit heavy rain again just before DC which required some slowing down.

We realized how much a nice car makes a difference for the driver. On the drive down, DH drove around 6 hours straight and coming home he drove about 11 hours. He really loves this new car.

Excellent detailed report!

Ah, that GA construction continues....

All the best.

Yeah, we'll be in hotels too. We have a van, no motor home. Our thinking is this: There's lots of little attractions that aren't worth it on their own, but would be a lovely diversion for an hour or two along the way. We're trying to string those together. And, we're working on two different southern routes...so we're trying to get fancy. As for my MIL, . She's a very nice woman, we simply have very different lifestyles. She does like Disney though, and will travel to meet us when she can. I'm thinking she might make it to WDW in Jan. when we plan on driving there next.

that does sound nice. we either have to wait for another 9 years when we retire, (hopefully) so we have time to do the stopping. or, have to make a blast run out and back in three weeks. vacation time is limited. this work thing is realy getting in the way.

You basically can do 70 through them no problem, but there are a couple where you will want to make sure the breaks work. When you need to pass the semis you will feel a bit more scared as well. You can tell when the bad parts are coming though. Pay attention to the "no trucks left lane" signs and you know that isn't the best turn.
Can you tell me a litle more about the 7-19-77 part of the trip? How is 19? I am just trying to figure out where we want to stop our first night? I was thinking Morgantown if all of VW is farily rugged terrain. If it doesn't start getting "bad" until you're farther south, I would like to just keep going. Are there quitea few places to stop or is it really in the middle of nowhere? Thanks! We leave in five days!

We hope to do the same thing when we retire. Mike did that for 6 weeks back when he was young and it was really great. Every time we see something interesting on TV, he's been there! They drove southern on the way out, then north on the way back. Slept under the stars at Yellowstone, saw so many historical and tourist sites, it just sounded perfect. He can still tell stories about it if we ask.

Is it primarily northbound construction or both north and south on I-95 in GA?

[It wasn't a concern on our last drive in June.]

All the best.

I think I might have the longest drive - 1953 miles each way or 3906 miles return trip. Have done it in 2008, 2006 and 2003, I am the only driver as DH does not like to drive on highways (plus 5 times in the 70's with my parents).
