Rockets Exploding All Over the Place

First the one headed for the Space Station, now a Virgin Atlantic space tourism rocket over the desert. What do you think is going on?

I don't really think it is faulty engineering, I think this is simply put a completely new field and there will be some trial and error.

I know, I know we have done the whole space travel thing before, but the private companies are more likely to use newer, untested technology. Which in the long run will be a good thing, but in the meanwhile it will mean more trial and error.

It has apparently just been revealed that the virgin Atlantic shuttle, they intentionally blew up the rocket because they realized it wasn't going to reach escape velocity and blowing it up was a better choice than letting the situation get worse.

So, obviously the private companies are also putting safeguards in to ensure people's safety.

I admittedly don't know much about the other one.

For the first one, we are. You don't outsource to the Russians for pete's sake! We are becoming pathetic.

I voted other. Rockets have exploded since we first started firing rockets into space because firing a tube of massively explosive fuel with enough force to overcome the gravity of the planet and to penetrate the atmosphere is complicated, and when something goes wrong, even something minor, with a tube of massively explosive rocket fuel flying through the atmosphere, bad things happen.

I'm actually surprised that we don't have more rocket explosions than we have...
