Wishes in Catsablanca: 7.22.13 Epcot Wedding PJ&TR! Updates

Welcome to my DFTW PJ!

I am a very long time lurker, so I can’t believe I finally get to make one of these things for my very own wedding! So exciting! Right now we are planning for a July 2013 wedding. I just hope I don’t run out of things to write about between now and then.

((There's a table of contents in the next post to navigate this monster thread!))

* * *

About the Bride
: Hi, my name is Nicole and I can’t wait to be a Disney bride. I’m currently in my last (aka seventh, yikes!) year of university. I’m a historian and a costumer/costume designer, but still mostly in a student capacity. I love Disney, as I’m sure you can all well imagine. I’ve only been to Disney World three times... can you imagine? I’m looking forward to rapidly increasing that number in the near future. Oh and I like to make a lot of costumes for myself and, occasionally, for friends. Like Disney princess costumes. Yeah, I’m that kind of Disney fan. I also have three cats and I'm Canadian. I think that about sums me up.

In case it wasn't obvious, I love The Aristocats and I also love cats.

About the Groom: His name is Bryan. He’s a high school teacher (summertime wedding here we come!). He can sometimes be prevailed upon to wear costumes that I make for him, but I have yet to convince him to accompany me as a Disney prince. Nevertheless, he clearly loves me very much to indulge me at all. And before anyone starts to think it’s just me, he’s a big Disney fan too!

DF also loves cats. Especially Disney Cats.

How We Met
:
So, our story begins in December 2005. It’s not the most exciting story, so I’ll try and keep it pretty brief. We met through a local history organization where we were both volunteering. On my first day of volunteering, I was helping to make balloons and serve cake for their open house. He says he was surprised when he saw me there; he wasn’t used to seeing pretty girls at the events. Of course... you could probably replace “pretty girls” with “ladies under 60” and get a better sense of the type of people that generally attend.

We casually met at several more volunteer opportunities during 2006. And then we finally got to become better acquainted in the summer of 2006 when I was offered a summer job at the same local history organization at the same time as my DF. (As a side note: to give you an idea of the unlikelihood of me actually meeting someone that I could form a relationship with at this job, there were a grand total of eight employees – which is more than usual – and only two were actually male.)

Finally, at the end of the summer there was a BBQ celebration for all the employees, and my DF offered to give me a ride home at the end. On the way home he asked me out, and although there was a lot of confusion on my part about whether or not that first date was actually a date-date, the rest is history.

When he proposed, we’d been dating just shy of five years.

And since that story was a little bit dull, here are a couple more photos from our recent Disney (Engagement) Vacation.

The Proposal:
So, all my hint-hinting paid off and my DF proposed to me during our July 2011 WDW vacation!

We arrived at our resort AKL around 3:00pm, so we didn’t really have enough time to do too much except get changed and settled into our room. On the first night of our vacation we had an ADR for dinner at 1900 Park Fare, so I brought a nice outfit to change into in my carry-on; I was going to meet Prince Charming for the first time after all. This was quite lucky because my luggage didn’t arrive to our room before it was time leave. Unfortunately neither did the charger for our poor battery-drained camera, which was in my suitcase. We headed off to Cinderella’s Happily Ever After Dinner, tragically camera-less.

When we arrived at the Grand Floridian my DF appeared a little agitated. I didn’t really think too much of this, he’s normally a little neurotic, so despite noting his behaviour I just dismissed it. At this time, I tried to push him to go check-in for our ADR: I’m a pretty punctual girl. It was then he frustratedly informed me we weren’t eating at 1900.

In my mind: “but... Prince Charming?!”

He tried to explain something about a surprise going wrong, most likely due to my need to be on time for the ADR, and we were actually having a Private Dining dinner in 30 minutes. I was extremely confused, surprised (though he seemed convinced this was impossible) and pleased by this turn of events. After a bit of a wait and more confusion, our server (butler?) approached us and we were whisked away to the fifth floor of the GF to a private table with a lovely MK view.

My DF had planned an elaborate five-course meal, complete with cocktails and champagne (and fresh bread every course whether you ate it or not). It was pretty spectacular, magical even. But after a long day of travelling and the intense heat I was pretty much full by the second course. I spent much of the rest of the evening feeling horribly guilty that I couldn’t even attempt to eat some of the delicious things in front of me. And even guiltier when my DF told of the difficulties he’d faced to pull this event off.

At 10:00pm it was time for Wishes. Our server – who was fantastic throughout the evening – brought us champagne and our dessert, and a lovely rose for me. My DF had brought the Wishes music so that we could wait for that exact second the first flash went off and attempt to sync it up. I’m not sure if we managed it perfectly, but it seemed like it was matching up pretty well.

After the fireworks my DF asked me what my wish was.

In my mind: “A proposal at Disney during this vacation.”
What I said: “If I tell you my wish, it won’t come true.”

There was a long silence, and I felt like I’d killed the conversation. I was about to prompt him to continue when our wonderful server showed up again to check on us one last time and... Congratulate us?

What I said: “Um... Huh? Thanks?”
In my mind: “OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!”

After our server left, none the wiser for his slip, I looked at my DF, and I tried to pretend like I had no idea what was going on.

Me: “So... what’s your wish?”
DF: “Well, to have an amazing vacation with you. And don’t you think it would be even more amazing if we were engaged?”
Me: “Yes, yes.” *nod* *nod*
In my mind: “Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!”

So, even though this story is getting a little long, it’s actually not quite over yet.

My DF reaches in to his pocket - I start to feel a “squee” like moment building inside - and then pauses and holds up the strangest engagement ring I’ve ever seen. And I tell you what; I was totally ready to go with it, whatever, that’s fine.

DF: “Now... before you think you’re getting a $12 ring...”
In my mind: “Huh? What? Lemme see!”
DF: “This is just a gift shop ring, because I actually forgot the ring at home.”

He then began to explain how amazing the missing ring was – in case I was genuinely worried perhaps – but in my mind I was just like: “gimme that thing in your hand!” And I think I laughed, at that moment I didn’t really care too much. So he gave me a ring he’d run to the AKL gift shop to buy (BTW for anyone planning on forgetting their engagement ring in the future, AKL does not have the best selection of souvenir rings, try GF instead) while I was busy changing into my 1900 Park Fare outfit. I had to wait another 11 days to see my real engagement ring, but I did not mind at all. The important part was we were finally engaged! And so even though I missed Cinderella’s Happily Ever After Dinner, it turned out to be My Happily Ever After Dinner. Awww.

And here are the rings...

The ring bought from the AKL gift shop that DF gave to me at my proposal dinner. He chose the "aquamarine", which is my birthstone.

The ring that DF insisted on buying me from the GF gift shop to replace the AKL gift shop ring. I'll admit, it's definitely nicer and more engagement ring-ish.

And finally my official engagement ring. It was definitely worth the wait!

Welcome, Nicole! Your PJ title caught my attention, as "Casablanca" is my all-time favorite movie and I'm assuming your wedding will be in gorgeous Morocco?

I *loved* your engagement story ... it made me laugh out loud and I ended up having to read it to my husband, and he loved it, too. Kudos to your df for coming up with a temporary ring like that!! And your engagement ring is absolutely stunning -- so unique!

I'm anxious to read more about your plans!

You guessed it, we are planning a wedding in Morocco and it's going to be themed around the movie Casablanca as much as I can possibly manage it. It's a definite favourite movie of mine too!

I'm glad you liked the engagement story, I laugh and smile every time I have to tell it. I don't think I ever thought the story would go like this when I was imagining it before, but I wouldn't change a thing!

Thank you for your very kind words! He definitely was upset about leaving the ring at home, he compares himself to the mother in the Home Alone movie, when she realizes she's left her son Kevin at home.

Thank you very much! I think I forgot to mention above that it's an antique engagement ring. I absolutely adore it!

I'm still working on writing up my next post with all our preliminary wedding plans and ideas. But in the meantime I thought I'd share a link if anyone is interested...

My DF is also on the DIS and he's working on a trip report of our recent WDW vacation. In the TR he includes a three-part recount of the proposal, including his experience planning a Disney private dining event. So, if anyone really wants to know about what it was like when he found out the ring was at home... heh... it's all there!

His TR link: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2773890

My next post will hopefully be up soon!

How We Chose a Disney Wedding:
I first found out about DFTW through the DISboards, actually. In 2008 after an awesome WDW trip, my DF (then DBF) and I were thinking about what we could possibly do for our next vacation... and how it could possibly be Disneyified! This is when we found out about Adventures by Disney. I started lurking on DISboards to read info about ABD and trip reports. But when we decided ABD wasn’t going to happen I quickly found myself straying to the Disney Weddings and Honeymoons forum. I’m sure this is true of quite a few people, but the very first thing I read was Lurkyloo’s PJ and I was totally hooked.

I told my DF about Disney Weddings and he said it was perfect for us. He is not a fan of traditional weddings. As many TV shows seems to capitalize on, he says “people seem to act like the bigger the wedding, the bigger the love”, and if you don’t have a huge 400 person extravaganza with all the works, then your wedding isn’t good enough. He’s shy and hates typical wedding stuff like games and speeches and anything that can lead to humiliation. I am shyer than him and hate it all even more! He probably wouldn’t ever have a wedding if it was his choice, but he knows how much it means to me.

Anyway, DF was on board. So, excited by my amazing idea I told my parents and my mom said, and I quote: “I will never forgive you” if you have a destination wedding. Yikes!

So I forgot about it. For a while...

In February 2011, while I was away at school in another province, sad and living alone (the time between January and February is the biggest stretch between visits from DF and going home), I started to find comfort once again in the Disney wedding dream. My DF still liked it and still thought it was perfect for us. And I decided I should have the wedding I want. I could work on my mom, after all it’s my wedding not her wedding and I know she would forgive me eventually if she truly understood why I wanted a DFTW. (Although when I bring up our first conversation now, she denies it. )

So even with no engagement proposal in sight, I bought the Disney Weddings Passporter and started planning out and budgeting everything I could possibly want for my dream wedding. My DF was totally cool with this and frequently joined in, asking extremely specific questions that had me heading to my Passporter and the DISboards in absolute delight! We watched any Disney wedding TV special I could find and even countless Disney World and Disneyland wedding proposal videos on youtube. None could doubt my dedication to the idea!

The whole time he kept telling me, but if you plan it all now, what will be left to do after we’re engaged. To this I would say: trust me, there will be plenty.

The Plan:
So, I’m going to start off by saying that I have always envisioned my wedding having a 1930s/1940s theme, and yet more specifically a wedding themed on one of my favourite movies: Casablanca. It was an idea I came up with when I first met my DF – he is a huge movie buff, and his favourite era of movies happens to be around this time. Along those lines I was originally thinking we should have our wedding at a 1930s movie theatre-turned-reception hall nearby, but apparently I wasn’t thinking big enough yet!

When I was discussing the idea of a Disney wedding with my DF it seemed we agreed immediately that it would have to be held in the parks. Neither of us are traditional, so the Wedding Pavilion was never really an option. We’re also going all the way to Disney World from Canada for the event (and probably dragging along a few Disney-nay-sayers), so we want it to be as unique and Disney as possible – and what’s more unique than a totally in-park wedding!

With all this in mind, we both decided that the wedding day should take place in Epcot at the Morocco and France pavilions (which I might add are the two countries where the movie Casablanca takes place – serendipity!)

So the plan thus far is:
9:00 am Ceremony in Morocco
12:00am Lunch Reception at Bistro de Paris
Illuminations Dessert Party in Morocco, France or possibly UK (it depends on the guest numbers, I guess)

(We haven't called Disney yet - we're waiting for around the 18-month mark - so at this point I'm going on faith that all of this is going to be possible.)

We are going to be inviting around 65 guests – about 20 from my side and the rest from my DF’s side. I am planning to ask my best friend and a close cousin to be my bridesmaids, and my DF will be having one groomsman/Best man.

Other things we are looking to possibly include: characters, a possible pianist at the cocktail hour or reception (someone’s gotta play As Time Goes By!), and a Rolls Royce/vintage car transportation.

There’s also probably going to be some kind of at-home reception following the Disney wedding. But we haven’t really started to plan that one at all yet.

And lastly here is a little inspiration board that I threw together with a couple images of location and feel:
