Pricing Airfare with a discount web site vs calling the airline direct

Anyone have any experience with calling the airline direct after pricing a ticket with a discount website and getting the cheaper rate?

Most airlines seem to charge a fee for calling and booking flights. I always check the airline websites when I am pricing out flights though. Sometimes there are better deals there, sometimes not. If the flights are the same price I book through the airline direct in case something happens with a delay, etc.

I'd much rather book through an airline website...
BUT in this case, Expedia has the flight almost 300 bucks cheaper.
I haven't ever tried to call and ask for "price matching" although I think I read somewhere that they might...
I will have a ton of miles on one particular airline come feb (when I want to fly next) and was hoping not only for a cheaper flight, but for an upgrade to first class...

Are you sure it's really $300 cheaper, have you started going through the booking process to confirm? Often, third-party websites do not have the most current pricing, and when you start to go through the booking process it pulls the current pricing and changes.

I've never heard of an airline price matching airfare you found on some other sites.
