Port Arrival & Parking

Thursday, September 1st

10:15am-11:00am

We drove to Port Canaveral early Thursday morning, our day of embarkation, and arrived around 10:15am. We parked on the 3rd level of the parking deck, took some pictures, gathered our items, and got in line about 10:30am. Although the terminal doesn't technically open until 11am, they started processing us through the parking area around 10:50am. Our journey began at a podium located in the parking deck. After asking for our stateroom number and IDs, they verified our information on their electronic pads. They typed in our stateroom number and four Mickey heads appeared on their screen, indicating each person in our stateroom. They verified that each member of our party was present, and then they allowed us to walk across the bridge that leads into the terminal building. At the end of the walkway, we went through a metal detector before officially arriving in the terminal!

Terminal Arrival & Boarding

Thursday, September 1st

11am-12pm

We entered the terminal around 11am and immediately filled out a Health Questionnaire Form that was located at various tables throughout the terminal (they also had copies of the form at the check-in desks). The form had two questions, both related to whether any members of our party were recently ill (1--fever and cough, or 2--vomiting). We took the form to the next available check-in counter and started the check-in process. We pulled out our passports and the Online Check-in Form we previously filled out and printed off at home. We changed our onboard account from cash-based to credit card-based, and they took a picture of our family. Our pictures were used throughout the cruise to identify us as we boarded or disembarked the ship at our ports of call. Also, when taking pictures with photographers on board the ship, no Disney World Photopass cards are used. They simply use facial recognition technology to assign your photos to your account. Somewhat cool and weird at the same time!

The last part of the check-in process was being assigned a group boarding number. Boarding groups are relatively small and they run through boarding numbers quickly. Our number was 10, which equated to an approximate boarding time of 12pm.

After we finished checking in, we took time to explore the terminal and take a bathroom break. Although we had previously registered our children online for the ship's kids clubs, we went to the children's registration desk to obtain a waterproof wristband that our oldest daughter would wear throughout the cruise. It is an electronic Mickey Band that children use to check-in and out of the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab onboard.

There is also a model ship of the Disney Magic inside the terminal, which was really neat to see. It beautifully displayed all the exterior and interior spaces of the Magic. In front of the model ship is where Disney characters will pose with guests for photo opportunities. We arrived so early that we got in quickly to see Mickey. Minnie arrived shortly after, but we didn't get back in line, since it had grown exponentially and we were already close to boarding time.

All-in-all, we were done with the check-in process, kids clubs registration, photo ops, and bathroom breaks by 11:20am. We then sat and watched Disney movies until 11:50am when they called our boarding number. Once our number was called, we got in line and quickly moved through the Mickey-head exit at the back of the terminal. Then we waited in line to take a family boarding photo. After walking the gangway, it was around 12pm when we finally crossed from land onto the Disney Dream!

How was the new boarding and port arrival times? Were they enforced?
You were allowed to enter the port area and park early? Might have to think about this as an option.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience.

I have a couple of questions...did you have any problems getting to the parking garage? A lot of recent cruisers have said that they were told that the port did not open until 11:00 and to drive around until around 10:45. Did they let you go right in at 10:15?

Also, what was your port arrival time when you did your online check-in?

Thanks again!

Welcome!

No, port arrival times were not enforced. Being new to cruising, I didn't do online check-in until about two days beforehand. Much to my surprise, all early port arrival times were taken, and we were forced to choose the last time slot of 3pm. Since we already had plans to arrive at the port around 10:30am, we just continued with that plan.

We arrived at the terminal around 10:15am and were allowed to drop our bags at curbside check-in and head straight to the parking deck. In fact, there were already a bunch of guests dropping their luggage off. Also, the line of people that was forming in the parking dark to get into the terminal was already about 30 people deep by 10:30am. At check-in, they did not mention our printed arrival time of 3pm nor did it affect our boarding. I was also surprised that we were able to arrive, park, and board so early. I called Disney a couple of times and they said the port does not open before 11am and boarding does not begin before 1pm. However, we clearly made it through the entire process quickly and were on the ship by noon.

I highly recommend getting there early (no later than 10:30am), even if they begin enforcing times in the future. That way, at least you would be one of the first guests in line. Getting in the parking deck line by 10:30am made the whole thing such a breeze!

Exploring the Dream by Day

Thursday, September 1st

12pm-4:45pm

Once we crossed over the gangway and into the Dream, we were greeted by a cast member with a microphone. He asked for our family's name and then used the microphone to proudly welcome our family aboard the Disney Dream. The entrance of the atrium was flanked by Cast Members on both sides that were also clapping and welcoming us aboard. At the end of the line, a Cast Member took us aside and told us some basic information, such as where to eat lunch and when ship tours were taking place.

Armed with all we needed to know, we took off for Deck 11 to have lunch at Cabanas. Cabanas is a large buffet restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. We ate lunch there from about 12pm-12:30pm before heading to the guided ship tour.

View of the Water from Cabanas

The ship tour started around 1pm and ended about 1:45pm. We ducked out a little early so that we could settle into our stateroom, which was ready around 1:30pm. One of our checked bags was at our stateroom by 2pm, but the other bag did not get delivered until 5pm. From about 2pm to 4pm, we explored our cabin and the ship, as well as spent time with other members of our travel party. At 4:00pm, we participated in a mandatory lifeboat drill. We then relaxed for a little bit before heading to the Sail Away party on Deck 11 at 4:45pm!
