Engagement rings

Most straight men I know don't wear engagement rings at all. Some of my gay friends have engagement rings, but none of them have a traditional diamond solitaire. If I were thinking of getting engaged, what would you all suggest I do about a ring?

well first off knowing what your partner likes is number 1 to keep in mind (assuming you mean this ring is for your partner). Are diamonds or even other gems something they like? there are plenty of rings out there that have embedded gems. ((even as a woman I don't like tall rings personally), while my diamonds are above the band they are still very low due to the cut and setting.,,, I am bad at hitting them as it is (and constantly checking the settings are tight).

I know before hubby asked me we looked at rings off and on casually so he got an idea what I like/didn't like so when he chose the ring he knew what appealed to me.

Is the plan to wear 2 rings once married? that's one thing to keep in mind. It's a struggle ((to be fair it is a safety thing for him at work)) for me to get hubby to wear his band now, let alone if he had 2

He wears a chunky silver ring on that finger now; it has no stone. We haven't talked seriously about it - he knows I'm planning to ask him sometime towards the end of the year, so I suppose it won't come as much of a surprise. Maybe it will be best to actually go shopping for rings and let him choose - or at least show me what he likes.

yeah you can make it a fun date in the city or something looking at rings, have a nice lunch or dinner. Have a fun day at it and leave it at that... then in the back of your mind you'll know what he likes/doesn't like.

You could do as our friend did we went to Tiffany's while in Vegas as a group of 4: myself, boyfriend then(hubby now), our friend and his then girlfriend. Three of us were in on it... it was a fun couple hours for the girls to play at Tiffany's and try on rings, little did she know that his plan was to propose in the shop once he saw she found a ring (that he could afford lol) that she liked.

Needless to say it was a trip to Vegas we've never forgotten.

Definitely check out what your intended likes... personally, I can't stand gold, and I would *never* wear a diamond. My idea of a wonderful ring would be something silver. If it had a stone (not necessary, of course!) I'd want it to be red, green, or blue.

Diamonds are overpriced yet look cheap. ;-)

Of course, that's MY opinion. The only one that should matter to you is what your partner likes.

Mine's kinda like this but different band shape.
Platinum and diamonds - the only way to go baby!
Mine has a bezel set princess cut diamond.

Make sure he can/wants to wear a ring. My SO (24+ years) has problems wearing any kind of jewelry. I've asked him if he would wear a ring if we ever got married, he said "no". His fingers swell up sometimes, or so he says.

Gee, who couldn't have guessed that one?! Love ya Wally! By the way, I like it!!!!

I agree that you really need some direction since one person's beautiful is another person's tacky. I'm a girl and I don't wear a lot of 'expensive' jewelry because I'm too afraid of losing or damaging things. After I lost one emerald earing (I still have the other one tucked away) I don't want to take any chances.

My engagement ring is diamonds and Platinum too. Although not a princess cut...but of course, you're more of a princess than I am!

My fiancé and I had long talked about getting engaged and I was under the impression that we would select rings together and plan our engagement in advance. However, he ended up surprising me with a proposal at the top of Mickey's Fun Wheel at DCA on our 3 year anniversary. I was shocked and thrilled. He gave me a White Gold ring which I really like. I ended up buying him a matching ring and surprised him by Snow White's wishing well with my own proposal- to keep it equal between us. He was just as surprised! We have talked about getting separate wedding bands made of platinum. In summary, there really isn't an established tradition for same sex couples with respect to engagement, rings, etc. If you both want input it's best to discuss in advance- we never discussed ring specifics so I had no input ( though I am very content with the one he chose). Neither of us are into jewels on rings but if that's what you like and what represents your love best - go for it. Our rings have a clean, classic look with a single line cut across the middle. Hope I didn't go too off topic here- I am excited to hear that other same sex couples are taking part in the engagement experience and wish you all the best in your future marriage.

I found a ring I liked on David Yurman, and asked about future purchase. The answer I got was, "That's last season's design. If the warehouse runs out, we won't make more, and there aren't many left. Best not to wait." So, I didn't.

It's titanium and black diamonds. The titanium is nice and hard, so he can't smash it flat while working (he's a bartender); it also kept it in my price range. I don't really wear rings, and probably shouldn't anyway, given concerns about doctors transmitting bacteria on their hands; we'll get me something plain and inexpensive for the ceremony.

That is a beautiful and practical ring. I'm always smashing my watches and any other jewelry against something. I really like the way the stones are protected in that ring, and the overall design is lovely.
