When you purchase it, it has the expiration date printed right on it....so it starts as soon as you buy it.

Now if you are talking about purchasing a voucher...that's different.

When we purchased ours at Guest Services in DTD, they had our expiration date on them for 12 months later. Are you talking about buying a voucher?

Pretty sure you will only get a voucher which is a good thing. If they sent you a real AP it would be live when they printed it.

Any AP printed and in your hands, like if you bought it a park, starts from the day you buy it, not use it.

With what your describing...I'm pretty sure you are buying vouchers for your passes, otherwise your passes would be starting right away. We've had annual passes many years, and they've always had the expiration date printed right on them.

We've never purchased vouchers, but from what I've read here on the DIS, I think that's what you'll be getting. Then you just exchange them for your passes when you get to WDW.

Someone who knows for sure should be along soon to explain further.

This is correct - what you will receive in the mail is a voucher that you then redeem at guest services just before you enter the park.

I purchased my AP online from WDW website. I recall reading the info that states I would receive a voucher. I did get that voucher that I can exchange for an AP in the future. From what I understand, that voucher NEVER expires so I could exchange it five years from now or in Oct. (when i, too, am going) and the countdown will not begin until I actually get the ticket.

Here's the simple way to know...

If you are buying online you will get a voucher. You then exchange the voucher for the actual pass. The clock does not start until the pass is activated at the gate.

If you are buying in person somewhere on Disney property you will get the actual AP. The clock does not start until you activate it but most likely it will be that day.

The start date for a new (as opposed to renewal) annual pass should be the date the pass is issued and handed to you down in Florida. Sometimes mistakes are made so check the pass as soon as you get it.

The Disney stores at Orlando International Airport have been selling AP's (not sure whether they still do) and the start date should be when the store clerk hands it to you.

Not sure whether they went ahead with it but there has been talk of having AP vouchers "expire" after a certain amount of time and the probable result would be your having to pay the difference up to the current AP selling price in order to redeem the still non-refundable voucher.

If you get a voucher, the clock will start when you exchange the voucher for the actual pass. The date will be printed on it. Even if you don't go into a park that day, it will still expire on the date printed.

If you buy it in person and get the actual AP, again the date will be printed and it will be effective immediately.

First use does not matter. It's when the actual AP is printed.
