I am a chronic sufferer of occipital neuralgia!!! Anyone suffer with me? If so what do you do to relieve your pain. I have been on pain meds for a while and I want to come off so that we can start a family, but I can't take the pain!!! Please help

I am contemplating having a cryo nerve block. I am going to the dr tomorrow to discuss it. Anyone have experience with it?

I'm not sure what I have but the symptoms sound similar. The pain isn't chronic. It starts at the back of my head up the big muscle/tendon on the left side and sometimes (when it's severe) it burns and pulsates/throbs. It doesn't move to the front of my head. Pain relievers don't work (Tylenol or ibuprofen). If I catch it early I can do some head twists (to the left) or massages which seem to help. It could last a whole day but not reappear for a week or two. It started earlier this year.

In fact, I can feel it coming on now.

What kinds of massage have you tried? Cranial Sachral might help a lot. Traditional massage from a real therapist who just works on your neck, head and shoulders might do something too. Find a good massage therapist. Chiropractors often have them working at their offices. Good luck. Heat is supposed to help too.

This is going to sound insane, but it's really helped me with my facial neuralgia (I say trigeminal, but the neurologist says it's the trigeminal nerve plus a couple of others.) I've started eating a ketogenic diet. Google it. I think any diet that is mostly protein, from what I can tell about the mechanism that seems to help with pain management. (But I am still inducing ketosis!) I'm using the Attack phase of the Dukan diet, and it seems to be working.

Oh you poor dear, I looked it up and it sounds just like a migraine except I guess yours doesn't go away.

Have you seen a high risk pregnancy Dr &/or pain management Dr to see what treatments might be available while you are pregnant? If you go ahead of pregnancy you will probably have better success than after the fact because stuff like pain blocks can probably be done ahead of time and cover you a few months. I remember that my high risk pregnancy Dr's told me my migraine meds were fine after the first trimester because of the way they are rated. But each drug is different, I had a friend on low dose sedatives that was frantic because hers was very dangerous, baby was fine thank goodness... point is you have got to know. Anyway, it might be there are short term alternatives for you, there is no way you are the first woman in chronic pain who wants to have a baby... they must have protocols. I'd keep looking until I found a Dr willing to work with me who knew about pregnancy & pain management.

Good luck

My mother has occipital neuralgia. I must admit I didn't even know what it was and had to look it up when she told me. To the best of my knowledge, she goes for shots for it, and exists on pain medication.
