Alaska, who's done last sailing of the season?

I'm watching the GT rates for 9/1/14 Alaska, because I'm thinking of taking the same cruise in 2015, which would be 8/31/15.

Did rates go any lower last year? How was the weather late in the season in years past? Are you still able to transit all the way through Tracy Arm?

We did the cruise in late May a couple years ago. The weather was great, but we could not do Tracy Arm and went to Endicott Arm instead.

We went on the penultimate Alaskan cruise three years ago and we were told by the crew that prior to our sailing most of them had horrible weather. We had decent weather - no rain the entire cruise except for a little misty sprinkle. It wasn't that cold 40 - 50 at all ports - of course on the ship it could get colder.
We didn't experience any mosquitoes or bugs which was great. I imagine things can change from year to year but this was our experience. it was the end of August.

We did the second to the last 8/26/13. The weather was BEAUTIFUL, we got right into Tracy Arm… merchandise was half-price (LOL).

I would go that time of year again in an instant. It was perfect.

btw… no rain except the beginning of the day in Juneau… but rain is hit or miss… IMHO… it was perfect.

We were on the last sailing on a Rhapsody of the Seas in September 2010. The weather was okay--very drizzly our day in Juneau--and we got very close to Sawyer Glacier. Sales in the gift shops were good. I would do it again.

We're taking the second Alaskan cruise on the Wonder next year.

We did it last year 9-2-13.
It was a great cruise at a great price *VGT rate was about $2500.00. We were put in a 5A cabin on deck 7.
Tracy Arm was awesome a little drizzle and cloudy, but the captain was able to get the ship really really close. It was about 40 degrees up there...Brrrrrrrrr
Ketchikan was bright sunny and warm.

We would book the end of season cruise again in a heartbeat.

We've done Sept cruises twice, neither was DCL though. The last one was the very last cruise of the season for any cruiseline. Great sales in all the stores, weather was good, cheap fares. the only issue was we missed Sitka both times, which a Sitka local told me isn't unusual for that time of year. but that's not a problem for DCL since the ports they go to are more protected. I say do it!

Does anyone know if the GT rates for this year's 9/1 sailing came out before or after final payment was due?

I am pretty sure they were released after our PIF date (which was 120 days before sailing instead of 75 due to leaving from Canada). I booked on opening day and applied an OBB and compared to the current verandah rates, we paid around 60.00 less than what the VGT is now.

Our category (5B) went from 5,855 to 7,050 and now the VGT is 5,916. So, I still think that opening day pricing with OBB is the way to go, but if you don't really care about location and can travel fairly last minute, the VGT rates are great

$2500 for VGT is a great price. I think the VGT out now for the 9/1/14 sailing is around $3600.

We did the last one, 9/3/12. And we are booked for 8/31/15, as well. The weather was great last time! The only rainy day was in Juneau. The rest, we were fine in layers and jeans. We loved it! There were also fewer kids, because it's after school starts, and all that year's Alaska merchandise was on sale!

This was us too. HAL, last cruise at end of Sept., had to miss Sitka bc of a storm but once they rescheduled the rest of our ports, we actually had sun every day! Looks like DCL doesn't cruise as late so should be much better.

Was this in 2012? How funny if we sailed together on HAL.

2013, but it was still one of my best trips ever even with that storm.

I am assuming that HAL is Holland America Line. Have you done Disney Alaska? We are looking at the Sept dates for Alaska and, as usual, even with the VGT rates Disney is more (the only one near the Disney price is the Celebrity Solstice). Since its just me and DH we are looking at other cruise lines. Did you love HAL? Any advice is appreciated.

Yes! Mid-September a few years a go. Weather was cold and rainy, but I paid $300 for the week on Holland America!
