People who talk to themselves

Why do people do this? Help me understand. I have to admit, it drives me crazy. Almost everyone in my office talks to themselves out loud....they say things like:

"Ok, its time for lunch now. What should I eat?"
"oh my goodness, I forgot my keys, I should go back and get them"
"oh man im so tired, i should get a coffee".
"I wonder if I have any food left in the fridge? Oh look at that, I do!!".

These are just some of the things I heard in the past 10 minutes in my office. I honestly dont do this. Does anyone else? I have never worked in an office environment where the majority of people talk to themselves. Lol.

Do these people speak of loud in hopes that someone will reply back? Help me understand.

Try a coworker that says outloud (or at least in a heavy whisper) everything they type in an email. We never know if she's talking to us or sending an email.

Oh dear! That must be irritating. I'd say something, especially if she does it all the time!

I talk to myself a lot, especially in the car.

I figure if I am talking to myself, I am probably always going to get the answers I want to hear.

I tell my family I do it because I am the most intelligent person I talk to all day long.

I know some people who do this because they're a bit socially awkward and they don't know how to start an actual conversation, so they comment about things to themselves, hoping someone "overhears" them and starts one for them.

OMG you should see me when I'm driving
I'm pretty sure the minute I open my mouth no one would have to ask the question

Hate to admit I'm a self-talker. It's true that I just can't shut up. And OMG you should see me when I'm driving.

I swear you must work in my office!

Same thing here -- we have an "open cubicle" office, which means there's four of us in one big cubicle with a desk in each corner. The woman to my right talks to herself throughout the entire day. Every time she does anything, she'll announce to herself, "Well, that's done". Heck, she'll even go, "Oh my goodness!!!" when she sits down at her desk, like it's a struggle just to move.

Yes, thats my experience too! Our cubicles are setup the same way as you describe it. i've mentioned the annoying fellow that sits on the other side of me. He'll chew out loud, even SLURP HIS SOUP LIKE YOU WOULDNT BELIEVE. He'll shout out random crap like "oh my goodness what is this?" or "how comes its not adding up?", also things like you described "well thats done!" "ok, next page", or he'll let out a big sigh "oooooooh booooy". He's even hummed and sang and clapped!!!!!!! I asked him to be quieter, but his response was for me to move desks. Nice huh?

I think a lot of people talk to themselves when they are alone, in the car, doing chores, need to remember something while running errands etc. But I think people who talk to themselves loudly in front of others, especially over stuff like what to have for lunch, are probably hoping someone answers. I know someone like that and she is as socially awkward as they come.

I talk to myself all the time. That is why I love having babies! I can pretend I am actually talking to them!

I sit next to a guy who trash talks everyone within earshot constantly. I've noticed that I now count out loud, and repeat procedures like a checklist while I'm doing them. It's the only way I can keep from being distracted by him.

My co-worker whistles throughout the day too, except she doesn't know how to whistle, so it comes out like she's spitting.
