Glad you enjoyed the pictures. The golfing on Hawaii is unbelievable. If you get a chance, you've got to play The Plantation Course in Maui. It's just north of Kaanapali where you are staying.

I'm not sure what you mean by downtown Maui as there really isn't a downtown. You may mean Lahaina, which is the old fishing village in Maui and is about a 10 minute drive from the Sheraton and it's where a couple of the popular luaus are located and many different restaurants and shops too. Make sure you check out the Banyon Tree while you are in Lahaina. I can't describe it, but you'll know what I am talking about once you see it. You may want to check with your hotel for free shuttles to/from Lahaina. I know some hotels are now offering that to entice you to stay with them, so that would be a much better option than a taxi. We've always rented a car while there, so I couldn't help you with the price of a cab. If I were you, I'd rent a car, even if it is a compact car, to get around. Although the Sheraton is a great location, it's so worth having your own car to explore a bit more as you don't want to limit yourself to just the surrounding Kaanapali area.

If it is "5 o'clock somewhere," does that mean it can be 5 o'clock anywhere and all the time?

carpenta, what month were you in Lahaina? Do you know when the best time is for spotting whales? I was thinking about a trip for Spring Break but our break is Easter week, which is has never been before and won't be next year, and prices are higher. So I'm thinking we might do Fall Break next school year. I'm sure any time is a great time to visit, but it would really be cool to see whales. We saw humpbacks and orcas in Alaska, and it was amazing.

Bobo912, the whale-watching season in Maui is mid-December through mid-April. It's definitely the most expensive time to go to Hawaii, but not necessarily when it's the nicest there. I'm going mid-May. Much nicer weather, but no whales, unfortunately. But, then again, no crowds, either!

We were in Maui at the end of May. It was wonderful seeing a mom teaching her little(hmmmm?)one breach. They may be the same whales because that is their migration plot. Our guide said that lately the whales have been staying longer but who knows? The Old Lahaina Luau is fantastic. You can Google it. We had a great time and it is open bar with your meal. Really a great talent in the show and our daughter had a memorable time meeting the dancers after the show. The food was very good but I'm not a poi fan...but I like Spam...the #1 seller in Hawaii.

You saw whales at the end of May?? Cool! Maybe I *will* see some!

What company did you do your whale watch with?

I hope you do. We went with the Pacific Whale Foundation....or something like that. Thay are a group that educates and tries to save the whales. They have a store front on the main street accross from the Banyon tree. They give you alot of info on the lifes of whales BUT are not those crazies that only focus on their cause. It was a great cruise and we did learn alot. The store sells everything from T shirts to DVD's and they gave you a coupon for a free poster which was pretty nice. We have some great video because the whales breached pretty close to our ship and our guide said they were "showing off".Don't forget to go to Haleakala. Loved Mauii but we really loved Kuaii. We went to a Luau Kalamaku and it was an old plantation and the actors in the show were all locals from Kuaii.

Oh, thanks! That's perfect! The Pacific Whale Foundation are the group I was trying to remember! I came across their storefront in Ma'alaea (near the Maui Ocean Center) when I was there 10 years ago. But it was the end of my trip, so I didn't do any excursions with them. I couldn't remember the name! I'm definitely going to check them out. It looks like they do whale watches through May 15! But I'd much rather go out of Ma'alaea than Lahaina, as I'm staying in Kihei. (I got a wonderful deal renting friends' timeshare for 2 weeks, so it's Maui again this time. Kauai next time!)

Any other suggestions for Maui? It's been 10 years for me, so I know some things I want to do (road to Hana, Haleakala) but I'm open to suggestion!

The whales seem to have been arriving earlier (as they've already been spotted this year) and leaving later. Prime season IS between December and mid-April, but there is always a chance of seeing them at different times. Maui is the best place to see them from as the channel that goes past Maui is their normal route, but you can see them from all the islands. If you are going in mid-May, you will still have a shot at seeing them. Another great company to tour with in Maui is Trilogy. They were fantastic on our snorkel trip a few years back. We're heading to Maui in late May...I don't have much hope in seeing a whale, but it would make my trip if I did.

Our family also did the Trilogy snorkeling cruise to Lanai'i. It was fabulous. A highlight if not THE highlight of our Maui trip. Also loved Road to Hana, Haleakala, and the Old Lahaina Luau. Don't miss Mama's Fish House for dinner and the Paia Fish Market for lunch! Ahhhh...take me back. BTW, we stayed in Kaanapali at the Kaanapali Ali'i. Lovely, lovely.

Thanks! I arrive on May 13. I'm going to check around & see if any of the companies still do whale watches at that point. I did sail with Trilogy 10 years ago, so I will definitely check with them again! I remember the cinnamon rolls!!!

I do remember enjoying the trip with Trilogy, even though it turned out to be a bad day for snorkeling (the water was cloudy). I'm definitely going to check them out again, thanks!

I was checking out some of those trips to Lanai. That wasn't really an option when I was there 10 years ago. Sounds very cool. And I also remember Mama's Fish House and the amazing view!!!! I'll check out the Paia Fish Market, too. Thanks! (I'm staying in Kihei. Renting friends' timeshare. Same place I stayed last time. The location was great then, hope it still is! I imagine Maui's changed a bit in 10 years!
