Robert Sherman, songwriter, Disney Legend, has passed away :(

The world has lost an incredibly talented individual. Between he and his brother, they wrote over 150 Disney tunes, in addition to their library of non-Disney tunes. Having received a lengthy list of accolades, "The Sherman Brothers" are incredibly talented and responsible for so many memories of people worldwide.

Robert Sherman passed away last night. The following is an article from The Hollywood Reporter. Due to DIS rules about linking to outside sites, I am just pasting the article here.

Thanks for all the great memories and music, Robert and Richard!

'It's a Small World' Songwriter Robert Sherman Dies at 86
11:00 PM PST 3/5/2012 by Sophie A. Schillaci

The late musician penned many tracks for Disney, including songs from “Mary Poppins” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”

Songwriter Robert Sherman, best known for penning the infectious Disney tunes “It’s a Small World After All” and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," died Monday, March 5 in London.

While few details are currently known about the circumstances, news of the 86-year-old's death was posted by Sherman's son Jeff late Monday evening via Facebook. Read the full statement below.

Sherman had accumulated a slew of prestigious awards throughout his career, including two Academy Awards, one Grammy Award and many more nominations. With his brother Richard Sherman -- together known as The Sherman Brothers -- he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1976. The duo was featured in a retrospective album, released by Disney Records in 1992, titled The Sherman Brothers: Disney’s Supercalifragilistic Songwriting Team. Sherman was born on Dec. 19, 1925 in New York City.

Read son Jeff's post below:
Hello to family and friends,
I have very sad news to convey.
My Dad, Robert B. Sherman, passed away tonight in London. He went peacefully after months of truly valiantly fending off death. He loved life and his dear heart finally slowed to a stop when he could fight no more.
I will write more about this incredible man I love and admire so much when I am better rested and composed. He deserves that.
In the meantime, please say a prayer for him. As he said, he wanted to bring happiness to the world and, unquestionably, he succeeded. His love and his prayers, his philosophy and his poetry will live on forever. Forever his songs and his genius will bring hope, joy and love to this small, small world.
I love you, Dad.
Safe travels.
Uh-oh! What did we do?!?! OMG, we did it!

He brought so much joy to so many; his work affected my life in so many ways. May he rest in peace.

Oh no. How sad. I recommend watching The Boys if someone hasn't seen it before. Excellent documentary about the Sherman brothers.

This is incredibly sad. I just got back March 3rd, and we rode It's a Small World every night of our trip because it was absolutely our favorite family ride. We would even sing the song before got on, lead by my 5yr old daughter. I hope he lived a good life and may he rest in piece.

He and his brother wrote so many of the great Disney songs and wrote other great songs too. They were very good at writing things that would stick in your head too (not just Small World, although that one is probably tops there). Here are just a few of the other Disney songs they did not mention in the article:

Winnie the Pooh
The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers
In the Tiki Tiki Tiki Room
I Wanna Be like You
There's a Great Big Beautiful Tommorow

The world lost a great talent yesterday. I'm thankful for everything he gave us while he was here.

While I loved "The Boys" it is a bit depressing - guess they never really reconciled before Robert died. Very sad. I saw a premiere of it with the 2 cousins that made the film - so at least that branch is back together.
It was the soundtrack to my childhood.
Maybe he's singing 'Feed the Birds' to Walt now.

Hey, that's a wonderful thought!!! Walt's favorite...

lcasa, I was wondering about the Sherman brother we saw at the Wally Boag reception; that was Richard, right? Oh how I wish I'd gotten a picture with him! I was so dumb at the time I didn't even know who you were pointing out to me.

Yes that was Richard - he's quite a bit younger I believe. Richard lives in LA, Robert moved to London awhile back.
Richard seems to love to entertain Disney crowds so you should get another chance to see him - he's been at both expos and I've seen him a couple of times at the El Capitan.
I went to a lovely tribute to the Brothers at the El Cap just a couple of months ago - wish Robert had been there to see how beloved they are.
