Do kids need passports to cruise to bahamas?

Just wondering if we can take our 5 year old on a cruise to the bahamas without a passport and just bring his birth certificate instead

Need, no. Best idea to have it, yes. Make sure it is a certified original, not a copy if you go w the birth certificate. As long as it is a closed loop cruise that leaves and returns to the same US port they do not need a passport.

No, you do not NEED a passport. But if an emergency were to occur while in the Bahama's, you could not fly back to the States. It's a very, very, very good idea for EVERY person in your party, regardless of age, to have a passport book.

We were in the same boat as you - and decided to get the kids pass port cards...they are 12 and 9. We are only going to the bahamas with them as well - and heard all these things about "you need a book in case of an emergency so you can fly home" but we still opted to get them the pass port card - made us feel a little bit better about it.
We also live about 10 minutes from Canada and have wanted to go to the Canadian side of the Falls but were afreaid to do the border crossings with just the Birth Cert! Now we can go over there and not be nervous at all.
