What happens if you are sick

I read somewhere that they ask you if you have been sick before you board the ship. If you have a cold, will they not let you board, or are they asking about more serious illnes (flu, bronchitis, etc.)? Thanks.

The form you sign says that you have not had vomiting or fever for the past 48 hours. I can't remember if it asks about diarrhea.

I was mildly concerned because all of our allergies had started kicking up, but there was no problem or questions.

A common cold or allergies is not what they are concerned with. The form asks if you have had a fever with vomiting or diarreah in the last 24 hours. They are trying to prevent the spread of a Norwalk type illness.

This is so tough this time of year since kids are constantly getting colds. Sadly Murphy's Law says that your kids will start coughing right before the cruise. The issue of the form becomes an ethical one. No one wants a sick person to be on the cruise with them however putting any kind of red flag on the form feels like setting yourself up to be denied boarding with no compensation. I got my flu shot before the cruise and there were plenty of coughing kids on the cruise I was on in early March and surprisingly none of us got sick. They sell lots of cold medicine on the cruise. Some complain becuase it is slightly more expensive so we brought our own fever/cough medicine just in case. None of us got sick and the medicine only lasts one year so it is probably wasted money. Next time I would just pay a few extra bucks and buy it on board in the gift shop if I need it.

We went early March on the Magic and there was lots of coughing. If it is a virus and they know they will confine you to your cabin. Not fun and not reimbursed. I have a fear of the stomach flu the night before and always buy insurance just in case. I would rather not board than have to miss everything and watch it out of the room porthole. Thus said, when we were exiting after 7 days, every toddler we saw was coughing. So something went around. But maybe toddlers just cough.

If you purchase travel insurance and are confined to the stateroom for any reason that is covered by some policies. Access America's policy does. They also cover the cost for an adult when it is a child confined.

Funny enough--they do--sort of! A couple of years ago, my friend developed a stomach bug a couple of days into a 7-night cruise. We thought it was just sea sickness, but when it continued on a port day, we knew otherwise! To make a long story short, she went to the on-board doctor for some anti-nausea medication. When she described her symptoms, they quarantined her in her room. They said if she left, she'd be charged a fine! She was in there for 2 days before they cleared her to leave.

If you are asking about how they confine you to your room, if you are contagious with anything I would hope that common sense would make you follow doctor's orders. Last cruise DS woke up with pinkeye and was confined to the stateroom for 24 hours. His attitude was great and he said he had had tons of fun in the Edge already and didn't want to make anyone else catch it nad he could get off the ship at CC the next day. GS brought him a DVD player and a list of movies that were available for him to request. If he had wanted to order from the dining room menu, we could have done so but he is content with chicken fingers so we just brought him some from Pluto's before we went to dinner. [He is 12 so was fine staying in the room with the door locked.]

If you have a stomach virus it's not like you would be able to walk around the ship without it being obvious that something was wrong. On the PC cruise we went on in 2008 one of our tablemates was confined for a few days. He said that GS called the stateroom a few times a day to check on him, he thought it was to make sure he was in the stateroom. Your KTTW card is also flagged and you are not allowed to get off the ship or use it outside of your stateroom without someone being allerted.

On our 3-day cruise on the Wonder they would not confine guests to their staterooms or even see them in the medical center, trying to tell them that it was seasickness. Someone got sick at the safety drill in AP and the family was next door to our friends. By that night their DD had Norwalk, their DS had it night 2 and both the mom and dad came down with it on day 3 -- not good since they had to drive home the next day. Their entire hallway was sick as evidenced by the dirty linens and trashbags in the hallway outside all of the rooms since the stateroom host wouldn't enter the rooms [total seperate complaint made on that].

The brother of a friend was confined to his cabin for stomach flu on another cruise line. Apparently the ill cruiser asked how the cruise line was going to enforce the quarantine. Answer, "Sir, we have security."
