I will be visiting san fran july 2011, anyone know of good festivals for the 4th july or fireworks? also, any sugg for good restuarants but not too expensive?

Bump......same questions for me also as we are going there during this same time line. We have already booked our Alcatraz tickets ($86 for all four of us! good deal!) but would be interested in fireworks and other things to see and do based on this time of year in San Francisco. I have been there numerous times but never during 4th of July?

The canonical place to watch fireworks over San Francisco Bay is at Crissy Field in the Marina district. This is a mile or two west of Fishermans Wharf. But you'd better get there very early. It will be crowded, and parking a huge hassle.

ETA - Bonus: Crissy Field is walking distance (longish walk) to the Walt Disney Family Museum. In fact, I'd bet that WDFM itself would have wonderful views of the fireworks. I don't know its hours, but if you could combine WDFM with fireworks viewing, it would be a wonderful day!

Count our family of 4 as being there over the 4th as well, but due to our budget cut bcks in our vacation fund, we are staying out of the city near the airport in Burlingame- so, we're thinking we should get outof the city before fireworks- any locals recommend best timing to head out and back to hotel before traffic? We happened upon the horrible traffic outof the city one year when we happened to be there during Fleet week- while it was awesme to see all the festivities and Blue Angels- it was over an hour to get out of the city!!
