Mini-TR: Paris

Hi everyone – work has been absolutely crazy over the summer (and it won’t get any better soon, but maybe I am adjusting to it now). But I really want to finish this TR in some way at least.

In the meantime, I have put together a little update for you that is far away from Orlando. I was in Paris in August for a few days and thought I would show you some of the highlights! This first update will be Paris, the city, the next update will be a few pictures form Disneyland Paris (you did not think that I would travel to Paris and not spend some time there as well? ;-)).

Oh – and in case you wondered about the new avatar: It is from the Walt Disney Studios Paris, not because I am such a great fan of that park (it has quite some flaws!!) but because I think it makes a very nice avatar!

I had a few days in Paris and walked around a lot – I just enjoyed all the different neighbourhoods and did not concentrate so much on the big sites as I had seen those on previous trips, so this is just a rather random collection of things I found interesting:

Let’s start at the Centre Pompidou – which houses the museum of modern art as well as a large library:

The museum is open until 9pm which was great for me as I spent the evening there and watched the sunset, you have a wonderful view from there. The first picture has the Eiffel Tower on the left edge.

And this is Sacre Coeur, a church on the top of Montmartre (I went there on another day):

This is kind of the contrast – the Louvre which houses all the old masters:

Since I am more into modern art than old masters, I did not go in there, but I managed to get into the glass pyramide which you can see through the arch on the previous photo which also functions as the main entrance to the museum:

Another interesting museum which I visited was the Musee d’Orsay which used to be a railway station and now houses lots of statues as well as paintings my the impressionists:

My hotel was between the Gare de Lyon which is a very impressive railway station:

and the Place de la Bastille – which now is home to this memorial:

but also is the site of the Bastille, a prison, which was famously stormed during the French revolution on July 14, 1789 – stilled celebrated today as the French National Day.

One thing I fell in love with in Paris were the parks – this here is the Jardin de Luxembourg:

And this is the Tuilleries:

Do you see the green chairs? They are made of metal and are scattered around the parks so people can sit and relax. It was so inviting and I spent quite some time there reading and soaking up the atmosphere!

On one side of the Tuilleries was the closest I got to the Eiffel Tower on this trip:

One of my walks (I had downloaded some apps with audio tours on my Iphone and those were really great for a solo traveller!) I walked around Montmartre which was very charming:

There was an interesting market street:

And that’s a good moment to include two other food pictures – from other places:

From the quaint streets I continued on to Sacre Coeur and suddenly met the masses of tourists I had so far avoided mainly. Since tourists are not so interesting, I only show you a close up of the church, it is quite impressive!

Let’s continue with a few more scenes from different streets:

This was a pretty door:

And just around the corner was some street art:

This impressive building is the city hall:

And let’s end with one site which is also the site of a Disney film – Notre Dame:

I hope you enjoyed the brief walk through Paris – as promised Disneyland Paris will follow shortly and then we will continue with the proper TR! I just felt that you needed some more pictures to make up for the long delay!

Hello! Glad to know that you have been fine but busy. Thanks for the Paris pics; we spent four days there in 2000 and there are so many things I would like to see again.

It's great to see you back on this thread Magdalene!

I had noticed your new avatar. It's really good -- you're right, perfect for an avatar.

Thanks for the pictures of Paris. They make me want to visit. I'll have to show them to Marlene.

Oh - I could have a fresh French croissant anytime - they are just so much better there than here. I have no idea why.... I am glad that you enjoyed the pictures!

Isn't it a shame that there are far too many interesting places in the world - so difficult to decided whether to see the ones again which you have seen and loved or see new ones!

Hi Ellen! I think you really ought to make Tyler your personal translator! To be honest, my French is very limited and I had no trouble at all to find my way around Paris. Most people who work where there are tourists speak at least a little English.

And I guess you need to go to Italy as well!

Hi Rosie! Oh, I hope you will have a great time at Universal! Have lots of fun! And you really should go on Forbidden Journey even if you don't go on coasters!!!! It is such a great ride!

unfortunately not - somehow I was never hungry when I was close to a patisserie. I did not buy one single treat... But I guess that's because I got a few creme brûlée for dessert after my meals...

And thanks again! I was always looking for something that fits as an avatar and this is Disney - but a bit obscure, so I like it. Not everyone can use the husband's old childhood Mickey like Katharina did. I have always been envious of her avatar.

I am sure your family would love Paris. I was thinking of you and Marlene when I was posting and was wondering whether you would show the pictures to her - her love for France might end up being expensive for your family at some point. I guess she would rather want to chose Paris than New York City for her high school graduation trip...

I love it when you post pictures of Europe! It makes me want to visit so badly.

The churches/cathedrals look amazing. It's always fascinating to me to see buildings everywhere that are older than pretty much everything in America.

The Musee d'Orsay looks beautiful. I love the fact that it's an old train station--you can definitely see that from the shape of the building.

Are those chocolate croissants I spy in the left of the pastry picture?
