You'll want to plan your day starting either at the vatican and ending at the coloseium or vice versa. We got off at the vatican stop and took a taxi to the coloseium. Walked from the coloseium to the spanish steps (seeing the sights along the way). Walked to the vatican from there. Got back on the train and went back. Its very easy - lots of walking. We took taxi's when we were tired and ate at a fantastic place near the coloseium.
do you think the vatican stop would be appropriate if we weren't going to the vatican? we're making the trek with DD6 and our goals are Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, lots of random photo ops and gelato! If we can do all that - including the train travel in 6-7 hours, we'll be thrilled!

we liked the fast train - even though more money - because it seemed to save up to 30 mins each way. but i guess if you end up backtracking it defeats the purpose.

edited to add: the stop we're looking at is Roma Ostiense... it was listed here as a viable option to getting to the Colosseum (1 stop on the metro away)
http://www.roninrome.com/%20transpor...-for-the-day-2

does that seem correct???

we're totally open to jumping on the metro too if that helps.

and i'd love to know more about where you ate near the Colosseum!

here it is on this site:

(see 9:17 departure from Civitavecchia)

and the return:

(see 15:46 departure from Roma Termini)

but when I plug in the times on the search engine here, it says "no records found."

http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html

maybe they don't have them up for July yet?
any tips will be appreciated.

They do not have the June or July schedule posted yet. You can put in May to get an idea, make sure you choose the same day of the week you will be traveling.

Keep in mind that the IC train do not run as frequently so you have to be more on a time schedule. The last time I looked the IC train left at 10am while the regional has departures every 20 minutes starting early in the morning.

The IC train ticket also does not come with the use of the Metro and buses in Rome. You would have to purchase a separate tickets once you arrive in Rome if you plan on using the Metro.

If you don't plan on going to the Vatican then you take the train to Termini and then either walk it or take the Metro to the Colosseo stop

Here is a map of the rome Metro stations. The colored lines are the metro. The train from Civitavecchia is a regular train and not the metro. That is the gray line that ends at the Termini station

More info on getting to Rome by train

This is from Ron in Rome's website for traveling from the port to Rome by train. http://www.roninrome.com/%20transpor...-for-the-day-2
Last year when we traveled, we purchased the BIRG ticket for 9 euro. It included RT transportation to Rome plus use of the buses and metros. It does not cover the express trains though. Another FYI, we docked at 7:30am but the port buses did not start running until 8am. We thought, OK, we'll just walk. It was a very long walk from the ship to the entrance of the port (at least one mile), then another 10 min walk to the train station. We tried to get a taxi just to take us to the train station as soon as we departed the ship, but got no takers. Guess they were all there to transport passengers all the way to Rome!

question about transfers

I just came across this thread where several people have mentioned using transfers. Is it necessary to arrange a transfer because taxis are not readily available in Barcelona or are transfers a better deal? We had planned to just get a taxi at the airport to take us to our hotel- but we will need a minivan since there are 6 of us. Thanks!

For an example, a taxi for 4 pp and 5 bags from Las Rambles to the port was 25 euro.
You can use this handy taxi fare in Barcelona finder to figure out if it would be cheaper or not. I would definitely guess a taxi would be cheaper, and they are all over the place in Barcelona, very easy to find one.

http://www.worldtaximeter.com/barcelona/

This website helped me to not get ripped off also. The taxi drivers can be scandalous if you give them the chance. If you are knowledgeable about how much you should pay and agree on a price before hand it is easy, cheap transportation.

I just thought I would post a warning to those of you who will be in Italy on 15 August. On that day, it is the custom for children on the beach to spend the day throwing buckets of water from behind over unsuspecting people (strangers, not their own families)... I speak from experience!

I don't think there is such a big problem getting taxis from the airport unless you are a larger party...they're apparently small so you'd need 2 for 6 people. The big problem that I've read about is trying to get a taxi at the port after the cruise. While there are a few reports of it not being a problem MOST people have said they waited in a que line for 90 minutes (or longer).

Is a taxi the only option or does the blue bus come up to transfer you back to the christopher columbus monument? We are heading to the bottom of Las Rambas the cruise so don't fancy waiting 90 mins for a taxi! Thanks for your advice x

Pisa

We plan to do Florence on our own and would like to stop in Pisa on the way. How much time should we allow for Pisa?
Should I buy train tickets in advance through Rail Europe or buy tickets the day we travel?

TIA

Ports on our own

Hi all! I have been reading and researching soooo much about things to see and do and have narrowed our choices down and am hoping to get some advice.

1. Does anyone know whether we would have time to do the Blue Grotto later in the day if we chose to do the tale of two cities tour in Malta?

2. Has anyone been to Les Calanches in Corsica? I can't seem to find any excursion info on it, yet it's listed as one of the 1000 places to see before you die, and is like our Grand Canyon. Any thoughts, advice?

I'm still also trying to put together exact plans for finding cabs in Naples and Villefranche if anyone has any recommendations or things to avoid.

I thank you in advance for any help/suggestions!
