Is 18 months to early to start planning? (12 days to go) My 1st PTR update 6-2-12

Let me start this by saying that I have never done a PTR or TR before but with just over 18 long months to go until we leave I thought that this would be a good way to help keep my excitement level high when most people I know are calling me crazy for planning this far out.

First thing you should know about me is that Iím a terrible speller and my grammar isnít much better. Now my spell check catches most of my spelling errors but does nothing for the other errors I make so read at your own risk

Now a little history. When I was a kid all I wanted was a trip to Disney world but with a single mom working 2 jobs to keep the house afloat that wasnít going to happen. So years later when my now DH proposed first I said yes then I reminded him that he promised to take me to Disney for our honeymoon.
We got married on September 11, 2004 and left the next day for 7 wonderful days in Florida. I was so unprepared for what I was getting myself into. So much time went into planning the wedding that I never gave much thought to the honeymoon and even spending 5 full days in the parks we hadnít done nearly as much as we wanted to. Sitting on the plane on the trip home I could only think that it would probably be 8-10 years before we could go back.

Fast forward to 3 Ĺ years later and my 1 Ĺ year old son wins a contest that I had signed him up for and we were thrilled to find out that his prize was a trip to Florida. So instead of using the trip to take a beach vacation we requested a hotel as close to Disney as possible and after finding the Dis bought tickets from UT and Zach had his first Disney trip arriving the day after his 2nd birthday. Now we did more this time than we did on our first trip, thanks to all the wonderful info we got on the Dis, but with a 2 yr old there are things you just canít do. Still we had a great time and vowed to go back when Zach was a little older. The plan was to go back in 2 years when he was 4 but life had other plans for us.
In the spring of 2009 when I was just starting to plan our next trip I found out I was pregnant. We did the math and with me being due at the end of January 2010 we figured that we could still go in September 2010. Having a 8 month old might be a challenge but we could do it. Well that was what we though until my first ultrasound when I saw 2 heartbeats. Suddenly the Disney trip was out of the question, there was no way I was taking two 8 month old babies and a 4 year old to Disney.

At the same time as all this is going on my sister had her own drama going on with regards to her own trip to Disney. She had promised her daughter that they would go when she was 6 or 7 but much to her surprise (sheís in her 40ís) she got pregnant and her trip was postponed as well.

So now I wanted to wait until my girls were 3 (in Jan 2013) and she wanted to wait until her son was 5 (in Nov 2012) to take our trips. After a little discussion we decided to combine our trips and go together. Now Iím planning a trip for 3 adults and 5 kids for August 2013. But Iím never happy to leave things alone so when I realized that if we went a year earlier we could save money since my twins would be under 3 and wouldnít need a park ticket the whole trip was moved up a year to August 2012.

OK I think that's enough for tonight I'm sure that anyone who read all that is scared away for good now.

Hopefully this post will clear up any confusion about whoís who
when it comes to this trip.

Cast Of Characters

Me: m2zjj, Melissa, 29.

Fell in love with Disney on my honeymoon and wishes we could go back more often. Iím a stay at home mom and avid photographer. Married to Keith. Mom to Zach, Jessi, and Julie. Iím doing all the planning for this trip with a little help from my DH.

DH: Keith, 39.

Shares my love for all things Disney but doesnít share my obsession for planning out all the details.

Zach, 4.

My oldest. His lucky contest ticket was what allowed us to take our last Disney trip. Has been to the world just once and doesnít remember it but loves to look at the photo book from our trip over and over. Asks every day if itís time to go back to Disney yet.

Jessi, 1.

The middle child by one whole minute. Daddyís girl, full of energy, and always in to everything. Already loves watching Cars with her brother.

Julie, 1.

My youngest. Mommyís little cuddle bug. More quiet and reserved than her sister. Happy to sit and play on her own for hours as long as mommy is within her sight. Loves looking at her princess board books.

Laurie, Kaylee, and Tyler.

Laurie, 45. My oldest sister, who will shoot me if she sees this for posting her age. Not married, mom to Kaylee and Tyler. Has never been to any of the Disney parks but has been to DTD years ago. Wants no part of planning the trip, just wants me to tell her what to pay and where and when to show up.

Kaybug: Kaylee, 10 almost 11. Has never been to Disney but is nearly as obsessed with it as I am. Loves computers and video games, adores kids especially my twins and her younger brother.

Ty: Tyler, 3. Total mommaís boy, loves Cars, Mickey, Nemo, and just about every other Disney movie heís ever seen, is also obsessed with Thomas the train.

Kris: Kristie, 43.
I can't find a picture of Kris that she wouldn't kill me for posting.
My other sister. Never married, no kids, but loves amusement parks and rides so we invited her along. Not to mention to help even out the kids to adults ratio. May not be able to go depending on her job situation at the time.

So there you have it the whole crazy bunch of us.

Coming up next time... Details of the trip and the great debate To fly or To drive.

I am in!!

I can totally understand your need to start planning. Our last trip was Jan 2009 and I have just started the planning for a Jan 2012 trip. We will be celebrating our 20th anniversary and me finishing grad school. DS (8yr & 11yr) can't wait.

So do you know yet if you will be on or off site? IMHO on site is the only way to go especially with little ones.

Welcome. The funny thing about that picture is that before we had kids he wouldn't even hold a baby unless he was forced to so I get a kick out of seeing him holding not one but two tiny babies at the same time.

When to go and where to stay.

Once we made the decision to move our trip up a year to 2012 I realized that we had a few other decisions to make.

First when to go. We have gone in September for both of our earlier trips but September wasnít going to work this time for 2 reasons. Reason one, 3 of the 5 kids would be in school and we werenít willing to pull them all out for a whole week so close to the beginning of the school year. Two, we werenít sure DH would be able to get enough time off in September. Since we wanted to go as late in the year as possible without overlapping the school year August was the only choice.

Once that was settled we moved onto how long to stay for. But to make that decision we had to figure out whether to drive or fly. After much discussion and cost calculations we decided to rent a 12 passenger van and drive, Leaving on August 4th and arriving on the 5th and staying until the 13th which would get us home on the 14th. That would give us 7 full days and a couple hours each on our arrival and departure days.

Now that we knew when we were going to be there the question was were to stay. Now Iíve never stayed on site and I really wanted to for this trip but after looking at the cost of three rooms even at a value it became obvious that it would be much cheaper to rent a vacation home off site. In addition to the cost factor there was also the space to consider. In a vacation home there would plenty of room for us to spread out and hopefully eliminate some of the inevitable arguments.

So itís all figured out when to go, where to stay, and how to get there. There wasnít anything more I could do until we get closer to the trip so I could start booking things. Of course Iíve never been one to leave things alone and I love to tweak things.

Next time. Can I resist the urge to fiddle with our plans?

My first 4 trips to Disney were all by car from NJ. Even though it was long, I have such great memories of being so excited all the way there and talking about the trip all the way back. I remember trying to get comfortable with my pillow and blanket while sharing the backseat with my younger brother. There would be books and walkmans and game boys strewn all over the seat and floor to keep us busy. Good memories. If you have the time to do it it's a great money saver

Oh, and you also don't have to worry about your flight getting cancelled

Do you have your vacation home picked out yet?
