Cami - How was your 5K? It's fun sometimes to do one just to experience a different side of the running community. DH and I ran one yesterday. The training is a whole different mindset, though, so we're definitely not competitive. Don't know how far you want to travel for a half, but we have two here in NC this fall. One is a brand new one in Durham in October on the 16th (technically for women only, but they're allowing men to run too,) and one in Raleigh on Nov 6th. Our Galloway group director is the race director for the Raleigh one, and it's a great race.

Jackie
The 5k was fun!
On the minus side: They run it at 2:00pm, so it's hard to know how to eat before hand. And it was a little hot - close to 80 degrees. The end of the course is mostly uphill in the direct sun. I thought I might puke when I got done.
On the plus side: The field is very small - some middle school students, their parents, and a hand full of others. So, I was the overall female winner with a very unofficial time of 25:19! This may be the only race I ever win. I had a seventh grade girl for a rabbit until the last half mile when I passed her. My husband said it was kinda funny to see people's faces when, after announcing the male winner who was a teen, they announced the female winner and a forty something stepped forward! By the way, I was my husband's rabbit until about the last quarter mile when he surged ahead of me. My only consolation is that he'll probably be hurting tomorrow and I'll be ready for another training run. Ha, ha.

I'm not sure how far we could travel for a half. It all depends on everyone's schedule - 3 kids, husband's and mine. It would probably be easier to do something local, although NC sounds quite appealing.

I have not had a chance to post due to a vacation and an eye injury.....back on track now and just finished reading several pages of posts. Everyone seems to be out and about now that spring is in fine form.

Jeremy I loved your post about what you have accomplished in the last year. It gave me a reason to get out my little running log and see what I have done since I started last fall. It was fun to check the total miles run and see how I have gotten quicker in training. Thanks for the tip. Also, congratulations on all you have accomplished. As a new runner, it is fun to see the improvement of others.....a great motivator.

Maura Your Boston Marathon finish was fantastic....congratulations a little late! I grew up outside of Boston and used to give out orange slices to the runners as they passed through my town. As this was over 40 years ago, there were much fewer people cheering along the route!

Cami Congratulations on winning your 5k...nice time too! I hope you got a nice prize!

Jackie Good job on your 5K. The idea o fthe relay in January is very enticing, but I would need a partner. Is the relay set up by age groups where you need a partner in the same group?

My training has started to pick up after the Princess 1/2 in February. Because of the eye injury I had not done alot of running for about 10 days. Not a big deal, except my sister had asked me to run a 10K to get a better corral placement for our Disneyland Half in September. (She is faster than me). My race was Saturday and I am proud to report I had a PR of 56.06. The time was better than I had hoped for so I was thrilled! Now I have to get the time to Rundisney so they can adjust my corral. Is there a chance that I will get her corral with her 1/2 being 1:55?

Happy Running,
Pam

Maura - You can always cancel the room. I'm optimistic for you!!!
Jackie - Great job!
Cami - Congrats on winning the race!!!! You showed those kids!
Pam - Way to Go!

I'm very excited! Our local running store was advertising a free running clinic for women and tonight was the first session. I've never trained with anyone else and most of my runs have been on the treadmill. This was SO fun!!! They divided us into various groups - beginner run/walk, 1-2 mile run, and 3-5 mile run. Since I've only done run/walk but I've finished two 1/2 marathons, I wasn't sure where to put myself. I picked the middle group and it seemed about right. I was at the front of the group and felt good at the end of the run. I don't want to push too hard and get injured. Anyway it was really fun for me and I can't wait for next week!

Jackie Congrats on you race and sure hope to see you in January---or else I need to start to travel more. Some many WISHers that I haven't seen in person in so long.

Cami That's a great result for you. You are super speedy--especially since it was so hot.

Pam Congrats on your new PR! Your 10k time projects to about a 2:04 1/2 marathon, but I don't know what the splits for the corrals were--guess I'm no help!

Amanda Glad you found a group to run with. At some point, I may do the same--if I can find a group doing hilly runs.

So today I start training....just don't ask me for what race, since I don't know! But I am just going to start the 1/2 plan that's in my book. It will keep me occupied and putting in miles.

And on a related note, the authors of the book I use, "Run Less, Run Faster" are publishing a new edition next year. They include "testimonials" from various runners who have had success with their program in the front part of the book. They have asked to use mine (I wrote them after I BQ'ed), so I guess I may be in print next year.

I always love the prizes and a little trophy would be fun to have next to a running log or on your desk! i received a small paperweight for my 10K finish and love having it next to my Princess 1/2 bling! I run for the prizes...

Happy Running!

Pam - The relay is pretty much open to however you want to do it. There's a thread where people are looking for partners. Some are trying to find compatible times, but most people just want to finish. Our chances are looking bleaker, but it's still a day to day decision!

Amanda - Glad you enjoyed your group. The group concept isn't for everyone, but I love it. And it's always better to pick a slower group and be comfortable than to be lagging behind.

Maura - That's so exciting that you may be in the next edition of the book. We're trying to adapt our "plan" to theirs. I couldn't make it through the entire book, but I skimmed a lot of it and got the highlights of the plan. I thought it was what you had used for your marathons. I think we're going to have to break down and buy it - we checked it out of the library, but couldn't renew it since it was on the waiting list for others.

Cami - Sometimes the satisfaction is all you need!

I guess I'm officially back to running on a regular schedule. DH is "coaching" my running buddy and me for MCM again this year. Monday was our second week of track workouts, and last night was our first official hill workout. I'm not sure my body is ready for this! I'm doing mine at a slower pace than they are, but I'm still pushing harder than I probably should. It feels good though, and I'm recovering within a couple of days. I also broke down over the weekend and upgraded to the Garmin 305 so I can actually keep track of my heart rate for the first time. I've had a 205 for years and never really known what I was doing to my body. Sometimes it's better not to know!

Cami - Nothing shabby about a trophy, large or small!
Pam - I'm all about the bling!
Jackie - Sounds like you're doing well!

I'm loving my running group. It's a really diverse group of women and I think that makes it more fun for me. This week our "guide" pushed us quite a bit further and a bit faster. I was pushing a bit at the end but I think we all were (except the guide, of course ). We all said that it felt good to be pushed. I think sometimes that the run/walk allows me to be a little lazy with my training when I could push myself a bit more.

Amanda, You are so lucky to have found a group of women runners for training runs. I have checked around, being new to my area and the only group runs I can find are at night and about 30 minutes from my house. It just does not fit my schedule. So....I continue to train on my own, except the day my husband comes to the track with me for speedwork. I just started on Sunday and it is hard work!

Maura, I have found the book you recommended, Run Less, Run Faster so helpful. My prior training runs were done with no specific goals. This makes the training more meaningful and hopefully my times will improve in my upcoming races.

Finally, I was thrilled to learn from RunDisney that I will be in my sister's corral for the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon. Hopefully I can run the whole race with her. My training is going well and my speed is definitely picking up.

Happy Running!

Hi all:

Just looked and it's been a while since I posted on this thread.

Pam - Glad to hear you and your sister are in the same corral. Did you contact them directly about the corral, or did you find out some other way.

Amanda - Glad the running group is going well. I'm also doing run/walk, and I've been trying to take 1 day a week to "push myself" some how. Some times it speed work, and sometimes it is going longer distances without walk breaks.

Pam - Yea for starting to run again. Good luck training for MCM

Maura - Congratulation on getting your story in the book.

Cami - Congratulation on the overall win in the 5K

AFM - I'm still in hybrid 5K/ half marathon training mode. The last 2 week I did 4/4/7 each week. On the weekdays like I mentioned above I've been Rotating through a variety of workouts to improve different aspects of my running

May 2nd 6X400m repeats then easy running to complete 4 miles
May 4rd Run 1 mile no walking / 1.5 miles run 1:40/walk :40/ Finished with run :30/walk 45 cooldown. 1/2 mile walk between steps for 4 miles total.

May 9th Magic Mile (with walk breaks every 400m) then easy run:30/walk:45
May 10th 2x1,600m race rehearsals first 1 run 1:20/walk:40, Second one Run 2:00/walk 1:00.

Right now I have 2 5K tentatively on the calendar June 10th and July 31. I'm hope to work up to running the July 31st one without walk breaks.

It's one of those days.......Sitting here in some degree of discomfort from strained shoulder/back/neck/chest muscles (started with my pillow, I belive and then aggravated by yoga!)....waiting for the dealership to call and say my car is ready (couldn't turn it off and get the key out of the ignition)....backing up my son's laptop so we can send it back for repair.....missing a doctor's appt as a result of no car. Hey, I just realized it's Friday the 13th!

Jackie Glad to hear the running is ramping back up and good luck with your trainin. In the year that I have owned my 305, I have never used the heart rate monitor. Maybe I'll drag it out this weekend and give it a try.

Amanda Glad your group is working out and sounds like you are stronger than you think. Hope you push yourself to new good things.

Pam I was wondering how it was going. A word of advice: the training--and especially the speedwork--can be hard. If you have a bad day, don't worry. Hope it continues to go well.

Jeremy Sounds like things are progressing nicely. Good luck with the races.

As for me....I skipped my workout today and will probably rest til Sunday unless I feel better. So not much to report!

Jeremy I found out my corral in the email back from RunDisney. The girl who emailed me said I would be in corral A. I do not know how she had that specific information, but my sister and I will be together and I am thrilled!

Maura I hope you were able to get out today and are feeling better. Thanks for the tip re: the new training. I have my second day at the track tomorrow and I am not looking forward to the 800 meter track repeats. However, it does make the longer runs easier. I managed to keep up with my sister for about 8 miles yesterday while visiting her in Boston. The cross training of biking and swimming is so different for me. During my training for the Princess 1/2 marathon I used the eliptical machines etc. at the gym. This training seems harder, but I am enjoying it more. We will see after a month or so if I still like it!

Happy Running!
Pam

Send me some Pixie dust please. I am totally out of commission (and in constant pain) from what the PT says is perhaps a herniated disk in my neck/back causing pain in my back/shoulder that radiates into my entire right arm. I have been mostly horizontal fro the last week, and no drugs seem to be taking the edge off, Back to PT again today, and if no relief, I am going to demand an Xray or MRI to hopefully get a more conclusive answer (not that I don't believe PT, but PT and doctor had different diagnoses)

Anyway, my "vertical time" limit has been reached. Gotta go lie down.

Maura-sorry to read about your situation. Since my C6 fracture, I have had the pain, tingling, numbness and weakness in my right arm that has not been fun. My neuro-surgeon still has me in neck collar for 5 more weeks with another x-ray in 3 to check the slippage of C5 and C6 from the bicycle crash. You might want to see a neuro-surgeon.

Good luck and update us.
