All great stories. I don't want a mug shot, though, so I think we'll let them know before the boarding picture I agree with the anticipation thing, but honestly, they would drive me crazy about it. They will have the anticipation of going to Orlando and Kennedy Space Center. Keep the ideas comin', please!

I know it's fun to surprise my kids. I love it, do it all the time. But not with things this big. A huge part of the fun is the planning and build up. We went to Disneyland last month and had some surprises. They thought it was one day, but it was two AND the halloween party (and a few non Disney things). There's no way I could have kept the whole thing from them. They already know about our cruise. The surprises will be in the excursions Have fun planning your surprise. I hoe it all works out for you. I just love WAY too much planning with my kids to do it!

I found this great Hallmark card of Mickey Mouse ears that were blank inside and I am filled with an entry to read (my children were very young) and gave them. Opened and read aloud and was shocked - and the two oldest do. I had never been on a cruise and do not really know what to expect but they were very excited.

I'm having a hard time keeping it a secret until Christmas!!

We like to plan with the kids too and there is NO WAY I couldn't not tell them until next April. I am getting a lot of little theme gifts to build up the last gift which is the cruise itself.

I'm surprising my FI with the cruise for our honeymoon. I wanted to take the DCL transportation, but we're flying in the day of the cruise, and I feel like a private car will be our better option. I told him we're sailing on the Carnival Sensation (sails out of P.C. the same day for the same length).

That being said, I'm making sure our driver knows that it's a surprise, and I'm not telling him until we actually get to the port.

Normally I would appreciate the anticipation and planning thing - we had a great time planning DLP this spring....but we have a couple (non-Disney) trips prior to the cruise coming up, plus we are doing 4 days in Barcelona pre-cruise - and we (the grownups) will not enjoy a minute of BCN if they know we are going on the cruise - it will eclipse EVERYTHING.

Talking Mickey is surprising our children

From the DCL website, we were able to register for a free character call from Mickey. He is called our children at 9 am on the day of our departure.... Not sure WHAT exactly Mickey is going to say in this call, but I hope it will be enough for our children to figure it out!

We are surprising our four kids in 5 days! They think we are going to Florida to see Grandma and Grandpa.
I have two options, haven't decided which to use yet:

Either we are going to wake up Sat morning (staying in a hotel because it is a 4 hr drive from Orlando to Grandparents house, which is typical for our visits) then driving to the port instead and telling them "Oh, did we mention we are taking the Magic to go see them?"

or, I have scheduled the Mickey Character Call for Sat morning at 9 for my cell phone. I can put it on speaker phone and let them all listen as he spills the beans.

It has been two very looooong years full of lies to cover lies trying to do all the planning, etc without them finding out. I don't think I will ever try to pull this off again.

I know exactly how you feel! We are booked for our first ever cruise in May 2011 on the Dream. Our 2 oldest children DD19 and DS14 have been dying to go on a cruise. If we told them now, it would completely overshadow our upcoming 10 night WDW vacation on Dec 26th.

So, we are going to surprise them on the last day of that trip. Thanks to a great DIS'er, I just printed out some Disney Cruise Line name magnets that will end up on our stateroom door. We are going to bring them with us on this trip and use them to announce the cruise.

Then the only problem is making sure DD focuses on her studies next semester!

Ah! Let us know what you decided with the surprise. I like the idea of the call. My kids will just flip out! I've got to make the surprise spectacular because they will be suspicious.

We are actually surprising our DD13 and DS15 this coming February on the Dream. They have been on the Magic twice before and I think the surprise for this one will be more special. Sometimes the surprise is more special than the planning. Everyone loves a special surprise that they remember for a lifetime.
