How to become a Disney travel agent?

I know there are some travel agents on this board. I'm not talking about the big sponsers-just individuals who do this on a small scale. I'm a high school teacher, and would love to make some extra money part time. Everyone comes to me for help when planning their Disney vacations (like most of us on this board), and several have told me I should charge for it. I've been playing around with the idea for awhile, but really don't know where to start. Any tips or ideas?

Thanks!

No one?

I have been doing some research, and I know that there are no licensing requirements in MS to become a travel agent. And I saw that you have to take some classes through Disney to be an official Disney agent. Anyone have any insight into the classes, or the cost? I'll have more time to research Thanksgiving week-need to be grading tests right now!

I am in Canada so our requirements are different..I can tell you though that the 'Disney College of Knowledge' is a free course and easy to do. As long as you or your Host Agency is registered with them you can take the course modules and sell Disney.

GOOD LUCK!

Try doing a search on the Community Board for "Travel Agent". There are lots of threads on this.

You might also search the whole board but that is more difficult because many references to Travel Agent are people planning trips.

I am a high school teacher and am interested in the same. I actually am in contact with a travel agent right now. Once she emails me the information, I'll PM you the info she gave me. Good luck!

The easiest way to get started is to find a host company. The host company will have the necessary ids needed to get into the travel agent websites so that you can receive commission. Of course, the host agency will keep part of any commission you make, but that is to be expected. To try to get the ids by yourself is both expensive and difficult.

Please be aware that getting started as a travel agent is not easy. In this day of the Internet, more and more people book their own travel. Getting people to turn their vacation over to you is not easy. I started with a host company several months ago and have only booked one trip. I have a couple others I'm working on, but it is a lot of work to try to find clients. Of course, you don't get paid commission until after your clients have completed their vacations. I won't get my first commission until the middle of next year. There is no commission anymore for booking airlines.

If you want to become a Disney Travel Specialist, you have to study and take a test. I didn't find Disney's test to be difficult. It was more difficult becoming a Universal Travel Specialist. Their test was harder and you have to visit their parks to complete your certification.

If you want to become a travel agent for the fun of it and to learn about travel locations, I say go for it. Don't do it with the idea of becoming rich.

Thank you! I think you helped me with some course work for my counseling class last year too. Did you answer some questions for me about the Catholic faith?

There are NO travel agents in my area-central MS. So no local competition. I know most people book online now, but the personal touch just isn't there. I'm thinking maybe I could work with 1 or 2 families a month. So I don't want to put a huge investment into it.

Hi Peggy! You decorated a room for me in 2007, and AllStar Sports gave you charging privileges on the key they issued you! That was fun..........

I have been looking at a list of host agencies. I'm nursing my little one right now, and have the computer close by. As I said, I need to be grading tests!!!! This wouldn't be to get rich, just to pay for my own vacations! Traveling on a teacher's salary is tough

Use the DIS search in the upper right on top of the thread list (below the subforums)-- despite popular opinion it DOES work!

I so remember that! Very funny!

I started by googling travel agents and Disney. Many of them have a page for people interested in joining their teams. Good luck! It is hard work, but very interesting!

You did a great job! She still talks about Tinkerbell decorating the room for her birthday. She'll be 11 tomorrow, so doesn't really "believe" anymore, but it was magical at 8!

I started a thread about this on another board & just wondered what the OP found out? I'm VERY interested in becoming a Disney-exclusive TA b/c I'm helping four separate families plan their trips right now!!! (And that's normally what I average per YEAR, but more & more people are requesting my services)

I e-mailed Dreams Unlimited & they have all the help they need right now. I was wondering if there were any others? Has anyone heard anything about "Off to Neverland"??? TIA!

I know Disney won't let you take the course without a host agency or unless you are a TA. And it is hard to find a legit agency... so many scams out there. What a fun job it would be!
