oh boy oh boy oh boy...Hey guys, look what I got...A 'lil early birthday present!

That's right, I'm still 5 years old at heart and ask for a pony every birthday (never mind that I've got five "ponies" already ). FINALLY, at 35 (at least, I WILL be when my birthday arrives on the 15th) I get my wish. Hey...all my other horses are dudes...and none of them are actual ponies...and none of them are gray , so I NEEDED her. Also, let's not forget that I lost two of my horses this past year (my beloved Kapri in May and my big draft Homer last October ) and all of my other horses are been pulling the weight of those we've lost. So I really did need another lesson horse, and it was time to add a pony to the mix!

Sooooo, this is "Daisy". She's a 4 year old, 13.3hh Quarter Horse/Arab cross, and fat as a dang house. Like seriously obese. Like founder is imminent if she doesn't drop some serious weight soon . So we've got her on our own personal Jenny Craig diet and exercise regiment . She's adorable. She's so sweet, and she moves like a million (very fat) bucks!

Ready for the best part??? She was FREE!

The grandfather of one of my students couldn't afford her anymore so her offered her to me, knowing I could give her a great home. Tomorrow we try her out under saddle for the first time to see what she knows. Today I gave her a much needed bath and a hair cut (she looks like a superstar...a very fat superstar). I'll post new photos tomorrow so you can see the makeover. This pic was right after she got off the trailer.

She'll be a hunter/jumper in no time, and DH came up with an awesome show name for her tonight...WHOOPSY DAISY.

I LOVE it!

The day the guy brought her to me, he first brought her to the vet's office to have her shots updated (a must. I won't allow a horse to step foot on my property without immunizations...and a Coggins). She apparently isn't fond of trailering, though I can't blame her; that trailer was a disaster. Anyway, she cut her leg just above the fetlock on an old coupling about 6 inches off the floor. The vet cleaned her up, and wrapped it. I took the wrap off yesterday to give her a bath and it's barely a little scratch, but I bet it bled a ton! Those legs are pretty vascular.

So I just had one of my students get on her and OMG! She is a phenomenal mover. Drop dead gorgeous. The other trainer who works for me was teaching a lesson at the same time and she and I were hopping up and down like a couple of school kids. What incredible luck!! This pony is going to win many many ribbons...IF...

There's always an "if" isn't there?

IF she has any jumping aptitude. She trots like a dream, but had some trouble getting into the canter. I chalked that up to how young and completely out of shape she is. And at 4 at least I have the advantage of not having to undo years of bad training. She was a little fussy in the bridle, so I'll have the vet check her teeth and see if she needs a float, and I'm trying a different bit (didn't seem to like the copper D-ring snaffle). When we trotted her up to the cross rail, she s;lowed to a walk and then stepped over it. At least she didn't "refuse". So we have some work cut out there.

She'll be spending lots of time on the lunge line! but I am very excited about what I saw today. YAY!

Anyone want to be interviewed for an article?

I'm a horse owner (I have an 11-year-old quarter horse named Cody at the moment, have had Arabs in the past) and also a writer. I am currently working on an article for Horse-Canada magazine, and I need some people to interview. The article is about the use of sedatives and calming agents in horses.

I'm interested in talking to people who sometimes use sedatives (say, for trailering, to have the horse's teeth floated, or at other times when the horse is anxious or hard to handle). I'd also be interested in interviewing anyone who uses natural or herbal sedatives in these situations. And finally, if there is anyone who is opposed to using these medications and instead deals with the horse's anxiety or "hotness" through training or changing the environment or changing the horse's diet, I'd love to talk to you, too!

Please PM me if you are interested in being interviewed!!

Teresa

We sedated a horse today to have her hocks injected. We always sedate for floating (it's a power float. Probably wouldn't for a hand float). I have NO objection for sedating a horse for it's own safety or comfort. Herbalremedies don't seem to work much, but I've found that using Quietex et al tends to make the rider more relaxed like Dumbo's magic fetaher KWIM? If they THINK the horse has been given a "magic" drug to be calm, the rider tends to stay calm which in turn keeps the undrugged horse calm.

We NEVER drug for shipping. That is a danger.
