Of course if they *did* start serving alcohol at MK, I would be first in line, but it doesn't rent space in my head or anything

No I did not but you know what they say "When a door closes a window opens" (these pictures were Oct 2007) I loved this horse so much and more each year as I got to know him. I had a govt job when I lived in NY and we were allowed to stockpile our time. I was coming down to WDW for weeks at a time each year and most times was hanging out down at the fort. Those CMs are wonderful and knew how much I loved him.

I had not seen Stacy Westfalls video thanks for that good cry It was beautiful She's pretty amazing isn't she I saw her doing presentations in MA.

wilderness- the link for the goldfish is a few pages back...I think as far as the photobucket pics looks like you have the size set on tiny..you know where the bar to "upload images" is, don't click that right under it to the right it says "more options" when you click that on it will show you different sizes to save your pictures...I choose large, then make sure at the bottom of that screen you hit "save" you will have to upload the pictures again and replace
understand?

as far as the mods...nope but we're going strong so far !
You can actually change the title if you want...Go to your original post, and hit EDIT...then when it open, click on Go Advanced...that should allow you to modify the title.

Well, I am a horse novice. My daughter has been taking lessons for about a year and has fallen in love. Now, of course, she wants her own horse.

We have 13 acres so my husband wants to keep it on our property.

I have no idea where to even start looking into this so any suggestions would be great!

Thanks

Honestly as a horse novice I would recommend boarding it at a good barn with knowledgeable people.

My DD is on her second horse and we got both of them from people we trusted. The first I got from a friend and knew the horses' history and I got Ivan from her riding instructor. She rode him all winter in riding lessons and we saw what a great match they were. Her instructor didn't have any other students that could really ride him well, and he seemed to like being a one rider horse, so she offered him to us. I would talk to your DD's instructor about it and see what they have to say.

Keeping a horse at home is not a good idea for novice owners. Board for a few years until you have a solid handle on the ins-and-outs of horse care. Then when you bring him/her home, bring two. They are herd animals and do not thrive living alone. Also, I have found, without fail, that the people who moved their horses from a boarding farm to their own property eventually stop riding. None of them have the riding facilities (arenas with lights or an indoor), and none of them like riding alone at home. Theymiss the social aspect of boarding. They also forget how much work it is and eventually find after mucking, watering etc, they're too tired to ride.

As far as looking for a horse, consult our daughter's instructor. She knows you DD's riding skill best and will help you find a horse that is the right fit. Also, consider leasing a horse for a while to get the hang of ownership (the time and financial commitment) before laying out a big chunk of $$$ in a purchase.

PS...your DD will never give up asking for a horse, so start saving now! I harassed my non-horsey parents for years. Now I own a farm and 5 horses, board another 21 additional and teach and train full-time!

I'd love to your story. I can't imagine boarding 21 & teach & train.

Horse owners: A place for us on the Dis

Luvchefmic, Where did you ride in Queens? I live in Queens and used to ride at a local place about 40 years ago. I'm wondering if it's the same place near Kissena Park?
It's still there but they don't do trail rides anymore. They only board privately owned horses. There are still a few places left near Forest Park.

I've been horse crazy since my youth.... parents both said they didn't care or either end - teeth and hooves so it took me years of riding others horses to finally have one to call my very own

Since that day my life has been filled with the joy of owning horses. About 10yrs ago we moved to the country and my life long dream of owning horse property became a reality

Nothing cures a stressful day then coming home to the welcome of my horses

My daily stress is usually caused by horses.

It was definitely near Forest park, we lived in Middle Village so I remember it was close but I can't remember the name

saying goodbye to Jumbo ...

The pictures with Jumbo were taken at the beginning of Oct 07 I had put my adoption papers in with the WDW zoological team in August. At that point he was supposed to be retired sometime in 2008..of course I didn't fool myself into thinking I was the only one who loved him or had put in adoption/acquisition forms. There were no guarantees but the manager had sent an email saying while they couldn't guarantee it she thought he would be lucky to be with me as I obviously loved him. I actually got to meet her that Sept and got an unofficial tour in backstage areas for the horses, I was thrilled and will never forget that day. I also have kept her emails (going on 3 yrs now) maybe kind of silly but still..........

Jumbo started having alot of problems with one of his rear legs..honestly I can't remember what it was..it was a pretty emotional time ... but if I ever had any doubt about how WDW takes the health & safety of their animals seriously (and I never did) it really drove home to me how wonderfully they are treated. Jumbo ended up undergoing all kinds of test I was told, not sure if he was sent out, or some specialist in addition to the FW Vet came in but it was determined that he could no longer be ridden and he was going to live out his years on an estate in one of the Carolinas. I don't remember where.
It was a bitter sweet goodbye. I knew it was not my decision but I had to agree (in my head) that that was the best place for him. What could I offer him? I didn't have property, and while there is certainly nothing wrong with boarding I had a picture of him living out his days in a stall most of the days and I would much rather see in my mind him turned out on lush grass and getting the reward this kind soul had earned.

So we said our goodbyes....now the plan was for me to go back to NY and then a few days later to go to MA. I had never heard of Equine Affaire until I started working at Knoll Farm. The former owner (and still partial owner) Anne Gribbons was doing a dressage presentation along with many others Parelli, Goodnight, Lyons, many others. I had bought a ticket for the 3 day event and was very excited in particular to meet someone. After all the reading I had done and all the talking about horses over the years I kept gravitating toward this person. I felt about him with horses the same way I do about Cesar Millan with dogs. Not everyone agrees about him but it was my goal to see him in action and by chance to actually talk to him. Feeling pretty sad about Jumbo I had mixed feelings about even going. Turned out it was the best decision I made in my life.

Nov 2007 at Equine Affaire meeting Monty Roberts after meeting him I then walked the aisles looking at all the horses and spent a great deal of time watching the presentations by the other people I had mentioned. It was fascinating. If anyone ever gets a chance to go to Equine Affaire I think its a must and then I found the booths with the horse rescue groups......gotta get those pictures ready :-)

DD has a friend from NC visiting right now so they went out this morning to ride before it got crazy hot.

Here's Allison and Skippy..

Both girls and two hot horses!!!

Allison was laughing at her friend because Ivan walked back to the trailer and just stood there...

What a cutie!!!

Time for apples!!!

What a great thread... not horseowners BUT we just started our first horse lease this month. DD11 has been taking lessons for over a year now and the opportunity came up through her instructor and we took it. She loves it - and I love the fact that we don't own the horse. Actually headed off for her to ride shortly...

But DD has been very lucky - her 5th grade teacher called us a month ago and offered DD a bunch of horse tack for free. Including a saddle - which according to her instructor is a very, very nice saddle. She wouldn't take any money for it - just wanted to clean out her garage. DD uses it on "her" horse and loves it.

Maybe one day - but we don't have the property for a horse and it is SO expensive to own one! LOL! The lease for us is at least affordable... and DH is okay with it - though I don't know if he'll ever be up for ownership (or if I will either!).
