Benefits of booking further out?

What benefits are ther for booking further out other than having longer to pay?

I booked our trip for Feb. a few months ago & was pretty much able to choose the cabin I wanted & I was told even if the price goes down I will still get that price. I checked a couple of weeks ago & it has actually gone up so I'm really glad I booked early.

I also just booked 3 night for Sept & we didn't get the dinning time we wanted & also didn't have very many cabins to choose from.

I'm new to the DCL thing so this might not always be the case.

Unless a cruise isn't selling well, the prices are usually at their lowest when they are first released, and cabin availability is at its greatest.

I agree with the lower price. I booked our Dream Oct 2011 cruise as soon as dates came out. The prices were low, got my cabin choice, and yep I have plenty of time to pay I have been putting $50-100 a month away for it and when taxes come this next year I will pay it off.

I think the only real downside of booking far out is that you have to wait longer for your cruise to get here! I'm sailing May 2011 - booked the first day Dream cruise bookings were available, and it seems like forever before we even get close to May!!!!

I think the waiting is the only downside too. It's so hard to wait that long & I made the mistake of telling my 3 year old so months seem like years to him. LOL

I told my 3 year old as well Mocha, now every time we go somewhere, he's like "are we going on the Disney cruise now?" We'll have to wait until May 1st!!!!!! Oh, the horror!

So if prices drop, can you change to the lower price. Here in Australia we would be locked into the price we booked at. I've held off booking our Mediterranean cruise for next year in case they drop as much as they did this year. We would book through DU if this makes a difference.

Guess it depends on what your definition of "further out" is.

8 cruises here, 1 on Disney, all booked a year in advance.

I know in 1980 when we first cruised, a year out was considered the norm, and I think there are folks here that wanted to book on the Dream and the Fantasy back when Disney announced them in 2007, a full 4 and 5 years in advance!!

Well, it's only a long wait for the 1st one. Once we cruised, we booked again onboard for the next year and just keep rebooking every year. So while I wait for our Dream cruise to roll around, we still have our Magic cruise in Oct to look forward to. By the time we get ready for our Dream cruise, our Fantasy cruise will be booked and ready.

fwiw, for our Halloween cruise on the Magic, cat 11's are $700 more than what we're paying for a cat 9 and they'll be stuck with late dining.

We just added my mom to our cabin, and the price for her is $212 more than we paid for us. We booked when the cruise first became available in February! So I guess that is a benefit for booking early - it seems the prices do go up quickly.... also, there were not a lot of cabins left to choose from in many of the categories.....(this is for our August Dream cruise)

Book Early.. but do little things from time to time to remind you about the cruise.. Make Door magnets one month, then the next read a book about the Cruise... anything to keep your mind happy, because it is so hard to wait.. when you book so early.
