Does Kindle show the illustrations in a book?

I just got a Kindle and was wondering if illustrations from the actual book show up in the Kindle.

DD10 would like to read using the Kindle and her chapter books often have some illustrations scattered throughout that I'd like her to be able to see. Just wondering if the actual book would be better than the Kindle for her.

The pictures from the books will show, but they will always be in black and white.

Yes, pictures do show up on Kindle books. I love the intricate pictures that show up as screen savers if you don't touch the machine for 15 minutes!

Also, if you have a different text (i.e., what's supposed to be a hand-written note in the book), it shows up in an italic-y font.

Having said that, I don't think all books are great for the Kindle:

I let my daughter buy a Manga comic book on my Kindle, and that was a mistake. The pictures are clear, but they're quite small, as is the text. I wouldn't buy another Kindle comic book.

I just bought a gardening book -- a book with lots of graphs and layouts, lots of photographs. Although I love my Kindle, I bought this graphic-heavy book in paper form. Likewise, I have a couple house-decorating books, which I wouldn't buy in Kindle format because the photographs might show up on a separate page, and photograph-heavy books just aren't ideal with the Kindle.

Also, although I have both the King James and the New International Version Bibles on my Kindle, I don't like to take it to church. By the time I can look up . . . the Bible . . . the chapter . . . the verse . . . everyone else is already there. It's great for Bible reading at home, of course. No different in format from reading a fiction book, and I love that your stopping place is held for you. But you can't flip around fast enough when you want to find multiple verses fairly quickly.

And cookbooks. I want cookbooks with big color pictures and paper pages.

A bit off topic, I know. I tend to do that. I love-love-love my Kindle, but few things are good for EVERYTHING.

Great! Thanks for your responses. I'm glad pictures show up; most of them in the chapter books seem to be black and white anyways so it shouldn't much matter.

I just like how in Harry Potter it has some of them and I wanted her to be able to enjoy that.

Number one - the Nook is not tons better than the Kindle! They are both pretty similar and both are great ereaders. Which one you choose should be based on book availability and customer service.

Number two - the Harry Potter books are not available in digital format. JK Rowling has so far refused to release the rights to have them published in e format.

Have fun! I'm playing with my iPad now and took my Kindle to the pool today - best of both worlds!

You will love it. An upgrade over the kindle, for sure.

Better OS, micro SD for more memory, ability to get e-books from the library, touch screen, better browser (which I know is not what ebooks are all about, but still nice to have), quicker response etc etc

Don't get suckered in and get a Kindle. Just not worth the it vs what the Nooks does

You left out user replaceable battery, you know.

I wouldn't have a Nook if you gave it to me but my new Kindle DX Graphite will be delivered the day I get home from vacation. Different strokes for different folks...

That is fine and I do agree. Nice to have choices for everyone of us book hoarders! At least we are all saving trees

Yes, we are!

I do think it's important to point out that a particular feature doesn't necessarily make an ereader better or worse - it's about the particular reader and the options and reading patterns that reader wants and has. Also, what other technology the individual has. I don't care about touch screen on my Kindle, for example, because my iPhone and iPad have it and if I want it it's there. If all I had was my Kindle I might miss that feature.

I do think many, and maybe even most, of the people who have a dedicated ereader also have some type of smart phone with a Kindle and/or B&N app.

You think? In our circle (such as it is) we all have various E-readers, but not the apps on the phones, laptops, ipad etc

The biggest thing on apps on those other hardware devices is the weight or screen size

You couldn't have had HP on any e-reader, so it isn't a Kindle thing. It's just JK! And it's WEIRD, too, IMO, because to me the way the Kindle pages turn is like magic anyway, so it would seem perfect to match them up. But then JK's a bit mixed up anyway, with her "no soda" stance in the Wizarding World (which I support), but then absolutely junk chocolate for her chocolate frogs...
