Our Feeble Attempt at a Disney Wonder Trip Report (Sept. 19-23) (Updated 10/13!)

Hello. I guess I will FINALLY create a trip report. The last time I did so, I had a couple of fans and I had absolutely no pictures (which was of a trip to WDW.) This time, I'm going to go ahead and max out the Photobucket account and give you all a report on how our first family cruise went!

OK, this is the crew:

The crew includes my DW (who will not allow her age to be written anywhere... EVER!) There are my two sons DS10 and DS12. The one that's a little taller is 12 and the one's that's bigger is 10. ( Minnie was just hanging out with us.) None of us has ever been on the Disney cruise before and no one but myself has ever cruised before.

OK, here's the deal- we left Atlanta around 3 AM the morning of Sept. 19th, not knowing what to expect. We arrived at the port around 11 AM. We didn't eat any breakfast, and I basically ate sunflower seeds and candy on the way down. (Sunflower seeds is my little trick on staying awake during overnight driving because it's not just something to eat- it's something to do.)

OK, so the brood was awake somewhere after Jacksonville. They were in-and-out of consciousness, though, until they saw this:

We got really excited! So when we got to the port, there was some attendants there that took our bags right out of the trunk of the car! The just had me pop the trunk and those bage were gone. They even took the crew out of the car!

So I had to go and park. When you park, you pay for parking upfront, so be prepared to pay your parking fee as soon as you enter. You get a ticket and you walk through to the terminal. (Write down where you park your car, too! That'll be helpful when you try to remember where you parked 5 days ago.)

OK, so I walked into the terminal and there's a screening process. It was quick. So you take the escalators up and you're in the terminal.

It seemed like a million people were in that terminal! There was a line to do everything but actually check-in. But check-in was a breeze! We went with birth certificates, and it was just fine and dandy.

So I went to stand in line to check in my DSs for Oceaneer Lab and my DW stood in that huge line for a picture with Mickey.

So anyway, around Noon, they started calling groups up to go on-board. We were in group 8, so we decided to crack jokes with the people next to us about how many people were in this terminal and other funny stuff. When we finally was able to get on-board, here's how it went down:

First of all, you go through the Mickey Ears.

Then, you head down to get your picture taken. Next, you get on the boat and on Deck 3. There will be people there directing you to the buffet. You are actually herded in. We wound up at Beach Blanket Buffet.

OK, the amount of food on these cruises are ridiculous!

The most memorable time was when my DS12 and I walked to our table to sit down. He had a plate of shrimp, which is his favorite. He looked out at the water, looked around at the activity and just gave this complete look of satisfaction- like "THIS is what I'm talking about!" He looked over at me, and we just laughed at each other!

Goodness!

OK, our stateroom was finally ready... the mighty 6547! It was an inside stateroom that was midship. It was really convenient! Here's a few pics!

So we went to the muster drill and prepared for the Sail Away Party!

The Sail away party was a lot of fun! It was really loud and people really got into it. Nisa was making it rock! Here's a couple of pics:

OK, after the Sail Away party, the ship started to move. And it was moving... fast!

So our first dinner was at Parrot Cay. Parrot Cay was OK. I think it would have been better if it wasn't for two things: 1. If it felt like we didn't JUST eat; and 2. If the seas weren't so rough. I mean, I felt like we were drunk, and we don't drink. I erally felt bad for those who were drinking, because I actually saw some people having a hard time.

We took Bonine, and it worked well. But here's some pics of our dinner:

And here's some food (by the way, Amita and Christian were our servers. They were great!)

So after the dinner. we stumbled over to see the Golden Mickeys. The chairs were very comfortable. The boat was rocking deliciously. And it was dark. And I slept right through the Golden Mickeys! Meanwhile, our kids were in Out-and-About having some fun. Afterwards, I went to Wavebands and ate chicken wings and other goodies while watching the football game. My DW went to go chase down Tiana. And when our kids were done, we went to bed and the ocean rocked us to sleep as we made a feeble attempt to stay up to see The Last Airbender. But The Last Airbender mainly watched us!

Goodness! This is a lot of work! I'll be back to talk about Nassau and Day2!

Great Start, I can not wait to hear more!! We were on the same cruise and only a few doors down from you, room 6551. I commend you on the drive from Atlanta straight down and then hitting the boat, with all of my kids potty breaks we probably would have missed the boat. DS was playing basketball on the first day too. He said it was great playing out there.

We were on Table 14. We had a table to ourselves, which was kind of a downer because we're people people. Yeah, and Bonine was great because you take it once and that's that. We saw that you have to take Dramamine every 4 hours or so, and we just couldn't keep up w/ the schedule.

Yes, and we recognize you all. As we've said before, we're people people.

I remember your door. Didn't you all have either a really nice fish extender and/or decorated door? We used your door as a reference point, because when we saw your door, we knew we were home.

Oh, and driving at night kinda relieves me of the potty break thing. The only potty break that was needed before they woke up was my own. Plus, little known fact, you get better gas mileage at night than during the day.

And lastly, playing basketball out there was fun, but it also was kinda terrible. You're playing on a moving vehicle, for goodness sakes. My jump shot couldn't compensate.

I can't sleep. My DW is on a scrapbooking retreat and that ruins sleep for me. Plus, I was up late watching the Braves game and it went into extra innings. So I might as well continue.

So we, uh, I woke up to get ready for the day. I was too late for sunrise, but I still grabbed my wife's camera and went out to Deck 10 to see what I can get. I'm not a photographer like my DW, but I try. You will see my first glimpse of Atlantis in Nassau.

I took some more, but you get my drift.

Anyway, I got the family up, got cleaned up and dressed out and headed to BBB for breakfast.

Oh, and Goofy was walking around. My eldest son loves Goofy, as you can see-

OK, well when we sat down for breakfast, we met up with a family that is from our home town. See, half of our home town headed south during that time due to Fall Break. Half of the boat was filled with people from Georgia, and most Georgians were either from Cobb or Cherokee counties.

So anyway, we ran into a family that we knew and they were old pros at DCL. They talked about how they were going on a tour of some sort. To me, tours are for tourists, and I thought that everyone will either run to Atlantis and run into some other tour. I wanted to just go into town and blend in.

Word of advice: TAKE A TOUR!!!!!!

When you first go into Nassau, you are looking at some really beautiful landscape. You see those really pretty buildings up front. You think that there will be some really cool things to see. And there very well might be. But here was our problem:

After you go through the Straw Market and enter the city, the city became eerily familiar. It looked like downtown East St. Louis to me, but only inhabited. And it's just a city. Those people aren't on vacation. They just want you to buy some jewelry, rum and other stuff. Then, they just want you to get back on the boat. And if you walk too far in either direction, you start to see people that look a little desperate.

Now I've been to other islands, and I've been to impoverished countries before, and Nassau isn't as impoverished as some, but it's kinda like going to Jamaica and the boat lands you in Kingston. I kinda wish that Disney can take us to the Bahamas version of Montego Bay or Ocho Rios, if you can understand it.

So here's what we did, we said No a bunch of times walking through the Straw Market, walked our obligatory 3 blocks in downtown Nassau, took some pictures, bought some swag, and headed back to the boat.

Here are some pics:

All in all, though- we spent about 2 hours or so in Nassau. But we ate lunch on the boat. After that, we spent our time taking pictures, playing games and chillaxing. These pics should give you an idea-

OK, now here are a couple of pictures of my arch-nemesis... Stitch! I don't like Stitch. While I was away, handling other business, Stitch was secretly trying to convince my wife to leave me and run away with him! Can you believe that? And the weird thing about it is that my wife never told me about it until I saw the pictures. It was just something between her and Stitch!

The pictures speak for themselves!

Innocent enough, right? But what about THIS!

I mean, how can I compete against that?

Anyway, by the time lunch came around, food became sort of a chore. You eat and eat, and you just start to get tired of eating. But you will eat anyway. So we went to Tritons for lunch. We also was there for dinner. But as you will see by my DSs faces, we started to not look forward to eating yet another meal-

It was good food, though. But we mostly ate appetizers for lunch that day.

But after hanging out all day, we changed clothes and went to, yes! More Food! We ate at Tritons for dinner. It was good, though. We had an escargot -eating competition. To us, we felt like we were on Bizarre Foods. Andrew Zimmern would have been proud of us! (Oh, and you get to see our other server, Cristian. He was from Chile. Amita is from India. They were great!)

And here's a picture for Grandma, who actually LIKES eating snails: Proof that one of your grandsons ate a plate of snails

So after all of that, the servers went dancing and then we left. My DW went on her character picture chase while I ran away. We ended up going to Toy Story- the Musical. I heard that it was a great show. It looked really dazzling, and I can recommend it. For what I saw. Which was about 10 minutes of it. (Did I tell you how comfortable those chairs were?) Yep! Slept right through it!

But I did wake up in time to applaud wildly, left and watched some of the football game on the big screen by the pool. I was on Deck 10 and that was cool!

I had to go drag our kids from Out and About so we can get some shut-eye. We turned on the Last Airbender to watch it. It ended up watching us.

Thank you for the compliment on the FE, the woman I ordered it from did an amazing job. Yeah I am definitely not crafty at all so no way would I have been able to make that.

I will second your Take a Tour theory on Nassau. We also did the walking tour thing and both DH and I agree never again. We are not opposed to Nassau, the water is beautiful, the weather was perfect, just walking around the area. DH is from NY and he thought it was worse then NY. I am not sure if I agreed with that, but nonetheless next time, we are taking a tour!!
