T-Rex might not have a ton of options, but they are happy to work with you. We probably ate the most we've ever eaten at a Landry's restaurant (Rainforest being the only other one we've eaten at) at T-Rex, b/c we got some sampler thing all without meat. A bruschetta, a quesadilla, something else....we devoured it.

The mention of Brown Derby reminded me of the Noodle Bowl we got there! We split it, and while a half portion in a HUGE bowl doesn't *look* big, we were stuffed from it (and the ravioli appetizer we'd already shared). It was SO good. The tofu was crusted in the coconut, which was incredible. The noodles and veggies were wonderful, and the sauce was delicious. I long for that noodle bowl again! It FAR exceeded my expectations.

That looks and sounds delicious! I waffled between CA Grill and The Wave, and ended up booking us at The Wave.

Any more confirmations about the days that Chef TJ works at PF1900? I still have a ways to go before 180 ADRs, but I'm a planner and I missed him in 2009 at Ohana b/c I picked the wrong day and he wasn't working that day!

That picture of the meal at the California Grill looks fabulous.......drooling! Booking our trip for another 14 day Disney trip at Pop for August. I'm so looking forward to another trip to Disney as a vegan. Everything far exceeded my expectations last year.

also I've been at 1900 and didn't get chef TJ. (note he was there) you may want to ask when you check in.

Beau - If you can ask if chef Jamar is on at the wave. He is really great!

Has anyone tried the veggie burger at Fresh A-Peel in DTD? I've been wondering if the base burger and bun is vegan...

description (per allears.net): a house-made veggie patty with jalapeno jack cheese on a multigrain bun. Topped with lettuce, tomatoes, fat free secret sauce, and served with a pickle spear.

I'm hoping that without the jack cheese and confirmation of the "secret sauce" that it is vegan, so we can have a vegan dinner and then dessert over at Babycakes.

we had no problem during a very busy week

We were in Disney during the week between Christmas and New years
12/27/10 to 1/2/11 - my oldest son Nick (21) is Vegan and we had no problem.

I booked all of our dinner ressies on line - and noted food allergy (other) on all ressies and checked Other and wrote Vegan ( if I remember correctly)

At each restaurant the wait staff asked who had the allergy, or requested Vegan - and the Chef came out and spoke to my son - telling him what he had to offer - we only had great experiences!

We ate at:

Mama Melrose at HS - ask for Pat as your waitress - she was great - The Chef was awesome too - he made Nick a grilled veggie pizza - no cheese - and even brought out vegan ice cream - when he brought out 2 plates of desserts for the 10 of us - as we were celebrating my parent's 50th Anniv.!

Ragland Road at DTD and Tony's Italian Table in the MK - no problem, and happy to accomodate

The best place was the Rose & Crown in EPOCT - the chef made a vegetable dish - with a garlic and thyme broth - it smelled and tasted amazing - I told them they should add it to their regular menu - the only problem was the first bowl that he made was given to another table - and he had to re-make Nicks - but it was worth the wait!

The next best place was the amazing buffet at Boma - the Chef came to our table and took Nick ( I followed along) through each dish - pointing out what was Vegan friendly - an advising him what she could make differently for him!

EVERYONE was very accomodating!

Is anyone interested in getting a veggie meal photo thread going? I've seen a few pics here and there, but it would be great to have a bunch in one place, since there have been lots of veggie inquiries on the boards lately. I personally don't have any pics yet, but I have 10 ADRs coming up in May, and I'll promise to photograph everything
Maybe we can start it off with that amazing looking dish a few posts back, from California Grill...

Vegan on the cruise - not so good

I'm just back from five days in WDW and four days cruising on the Disney Dream. It was a wonderful vacation overall, but we did have some difficulties getting vegan meals on the Dream.

Our park meals were great as usual (we also ate twice at Sweet Tomatoes which is a huge hit with my whole family).

We had noted that we had several vegans in our group when we booked, and I even called a week or so before we left to make sure this was included in our reservation. It was. When we got to our first dinner with our assigned servers, we explained right away that we were vegan. Our server said "Yes, vegan, vegetarian." English was clearly not his first language. We quickly tried to explain the difference between vegan and vegetarian. He said "ah, no eggs, no eggs" and even though we then repeated the part about no milk or dairy products we weren't sure he'd gotten it. (The fact that he offered us whipped cream for our bowls of fruit later suggested that, no, he hadn't.)

This made us pretty nervous about ordering because we didn't feel confident that he knew what we wanted. (Especially my daughter, who has severe allergies to both milk and eggs.) And the process was incredibly slow. He'd give us the menu, we'd ask if a dish on the menu could be made vegan, and the server would disappear for 10 or 15 minutes. He'd come back, say no, and then we'd ask about another dish. Off he'd go again. Meanwhile we're getting hungrier and hungrier. And it didn't improve much.

On the third night, he showed us the menu for the next restaurant and told us to pick what we wanted for the fourth night. Sounded good. I picked a ravioli dish that included cheese on the menu, but (after disappearing again for a long time) he assured me it could be made without cheese. Fourth night arrives, we wait for our meals, and sure enough the ravioli dish arrives COVERED IN CHEESE. I almost burst into tears. What is the point of pre-ordering a vegan dish if they are going to put cheese on it? And of course then I had to wait some 20 minutes until they prepared me a new dish.

On the final morning, the breakfast menu had no vegan options. We had saved some soymilk from Cabanas the day before (more about Cabanas later) so when we saw muesli on the menu (uncooked rolled oats with fruit and nuts added) that was made with cow's milk, we asked if we could have it served without the cow's milk and we'd add the soymilk we'd brought. Ten minutes later the server gives us bowls of uncooked rolled oats. That's it. No fruit, no nuts, just oats. We were all very upset, and finally the server went and got us new bowls with the proper toppings.

All in all, the dinners were very stressful for us. People rave so much about cruise meals, and we have always raved about Disney park meals, but this was pretty awful.

I will say that our experience at Cabanas, the buffet restaurant at the top of the ship where we had most of our breakfasts and lunches, was very different. On our first day we met Calvin, a wonderful chef, who watched for us every day and cheerfully made us delicious vegan meals, and found soymilk and vegan desserts for us. Another Cabanas chef made me a lovely apple cake for dessert one night, and made a chocolate birthday cake too. I believe his name was Khristian. They really saved our vacation for us! They even sent vegan burgers and grilled tofu out to Castaway Cay for us to have for lunch that day.

The ship was gorgeous, we all loved it (my six year old granddaughter cried when we had to disembark because she didn't want to leave) but the food situation was disappointing. I do think this was a training issue and that Disney Cruise Lines needs to catch up to the Parks in this area.

I did write to the Cruise Lines Guest Services about this. I was told that this was an unusual experience and that these things don't normally happen, and, no, we could not get any discount or consideration towards future trips.

This is so disappointing, and I am so sorry you had to experience it I'm glad that you contacted Disney about it, but I would have hoped they would offer you something after all the trouble your server put you through. I would have been so ridiculously pissed (and disappointed) if I had to go through that night after night. What a horrible way to end each day.

To be quite honest, food is a big reason I love to go to Disney. They make such a big deal about being happy to accommodate special diets. They're usually so helpful, so it's a really big blow when even Disney can't offer a vegan meal. I hope they get things worked out, because I would love to sail on the Dream.

Teresa,

Did you speak with the Maitre D? And was your problem with your same server every night? (I know they usually rotate with the guests)

I didn't know there was a Maitre D to speak to. And yes, it was the same server every night - the server follows you as you go to a different restaurant each night. That was part of our disappointment - we hoped that after the problems the first night, he would make some effort to learn what dishes were vegan or do something to prepare for the next meal, but he didn't seem to.

We did ask to speak to the chef, but our server said no. As the restaurants are very big, I can see that it might be a problem for the chef to come out for all special meals or allergies.

I was a bit disappointed in Disney's response, and I'm someone who LOVES Disney. It may have been an exception, but it sure impaired our enjoyment of a pretty expensive vacation.

Teresa,

I also was on the disney dream and ate vegan as well. I also had some issues. Note there is a restaurant manager at each location on board.
