Verizon Cell On the Ship

Hey there! I was wondering if anyone had used their Verizon phone on the Magic, and if so, how much it ended up costing you. Verizon's site lists 2.49 a minute as an international roaming rate. Is that all you paid extra? I know it is only available at sea, just wondering how it worked and if it is worth bringing our phone on the med cruise.

I cannot remember the exact cost but know that it was much more than $3.00 per minute. I had to use it just to check messages and know that I ended up paying around $25.00 more than normal and all I did was check it a few times.

If you can wait then just buy a phone card that you can use when you dock in the bahama's. Ask any crew member the best place to make a call off the ship as they know the best locations. This way you dont have to use your phone.

Either way remember its a vacation, use your phone as little as you can!
Enjoy the cruise!

If you really need to use it, make sure to switch to a plan that includes international minutes. Myself, I have Verizon, but I put my phone in airplane mode and just used it as a clock in my stateroom.

Are you only asking about on the ship, or are you wondering about the ports? If you want to use your phone in the ports, you can rent a global cell phone from Verizon for $9.99 for a month (technically the shipping cost). The rates in the ports are $1.39 a minute. You can also buy a plan for $4.99 for the month that lowers the rate to $0.99 a minute. Text messages are $0.50 to send and $0.05 to receive. The phone will have your normal cell phone's phone number, and basically replaces your cell phone while the global phone is activated.

I didn't ask them about on the ship. My understanding is that the ship's rates are what you get charged while on the ship, not Verizon's. I think I need to call them back & ask about that.

Thanks! Just asking about on the ship. I know/assume we will pay Verizon's international roaming rates, but just wonder if Disney tacks anything onto that to use their tower which is on the ship.

I can say, we have been on three cruises with Verizon and RARELY did we ever even get the reception so that we could make calls or get texts!! So I honestly would plan on not having it!

We have Verizon Wireless and wW sailed on the Wonder in January 2010. We had great reception.

We used our Verizon cell phone while out in open waters. We were charged $2.49 a minute for calls. We were charged .50 to send a text message and .05 to receive a text message. Those were the total charges -- no other hidden charges.

I know if you are in a port someplace, you are charged the "country" rates of those ports. Cellular at Sea takes over when you are 15 miles away from shore.

You should have perfect reception on the ship when it is at sea. The Cellular at Sea system has antennas all over the ship.

Interesting, your's is the first comment complaining about cellular at sea. Anyone else have an issue?
They didn't have it when we cruised, and we left our phones home anyway.

I guess that you missed the post to which he responded with a hardy 'me, too'.
