Thoughts on Baltic PIF date?

The Paid if full dates are coming up for the Baltics and I was wondering if there are still people thinking of cancelling?

After we paid in full for the Med cruise in 07, Cat 12's came up for less than half of what we paid for our Cat 6 (we were having sticker shock after paying for airfare) so we were able to downgrade and upgraded to a SPH. From following the boards I realized that DCL isn't making those kind of opportunities available anymore.

The reason I am even contemplating this is because there are now Cat 12's available on the Baltics which were not there at the beginning of booking.

We are currently booked on NCL's Epic transatlantic in two connnecting balcony cabins for a mere $3872 for 7 days. Even if I doubled that for 14 days it is still $3000 less than a Cat 11. It is really hard to justify the price no matter how much I would rather sail DCL and see the Baltic ports, but I guess I am still holding out hope....

It was very steep. We were booked but after looking around decided to cancel.

I guess after the announcement by DCL that they would not refund anything after the PIF date things will be quite different. I guess we will have to wait and see. I think there are quite a few cabins left on the Baltics....

I didn't book to begin with--decided it was way too expensive! These are really port intensive cruises, so it seems less important which ship you are on.

For a TA crossing, where I will really be there to enjoy the ship, I care who I am sailing with. When the ship is basically serving as a floating hotel, I'm less sure that it is worth the premium price.

I agree. When it is that intensive all you want to do on sea days is relax; like on the med cruise.

That's what makes the Epic transatlantic so attractive since it is a destination in itself.

We're doing the Epic TA too. Really looking forward to it. I was thrilled to find a TA crossing in June when the kids are out of school. The ship looks amazing, my girls are excited about the Aqua Park.

How cool! We originally booked the NCL Baltic but that fell through because of school. So, I too was tickled to find this cruise. I am still a leary about the seas because I can get bad motion sickness. I see that you did a TA. How was it?

My kids are more excited about this cruise because of all the attractions and our daughter is also excited about the Aqua Park. I hope the weather cooperates and they get to use it.

Maybe I should just give up on the DCL Baltic; we are just as excited about seeing London and New York. So much to think about....

There were some cat 12 released for the Baltics but the price was not exactly way below the cat 11's like they have offered on some Med cruises.

Of course the thread the other day about DCL no longer allowing people to apply a reduced rate to an existing reservation after pay in full day has huge implications re the Baltics... Imagine if there were a lot of cancellations and they had to release more reasonable rates to fill the ship - just how MAD would all those people who had paid full price be...

When we did the TA in 2007, the seas were like glass. Gorgeous sunny days and not much movement at all. Now, I have no idea what it will be like from Southampton to NY but I'm looking forward to all of the sea days. It will be a blast exploring all of the amazing attractions on the Epic.

I noticed the cat 12's too but still too pricey. It could get very interesting in a few weeks. Somehow I don't think they will be knocking off $3000 or more off the price though. (my personal limit)

That sounds great! I hope that applies to the more northerly route we will probably be taking (I'm guessing).

When is the cancel date for the Baltics? Is it still 75 days? If so, then even if you PIF, can't you still just cancel the whole shebang and rebook if the prices come down?

If I am not mistaken, the PIF date for the first Baltic is Feb 14, 120 days out for these cruises. If you cancel after the PIF date there is a penalty. Can't remember exactly what it is, haven't had to cancel.

The thing is that DCL waits until everyone is paid in full, looks at their inventory and tries to fill the remaining cabins. On the med they did this by dropping the price of the Cat 12's by about half then they upgraded people to fill the boat. I think it back-fired because quite a few people, us included, downgraded to the 12's and received a substantial refund. As a business they don't want to be giving money back.

Bumping this up to get current thoughts given that the first Baltic paid in full date is next week.
