How much to press a penny?

I wasn't sure if I should post here or on parks board, sorry! But, how much does it cost to press a penny these day?? I have my shiniest pennies in a ziploc ready to pack, but started wondering how much it cost. Seems like it was 50 cents?? Also seems like it only took quarters to pay??

That's right- 50 cents- 2 quarters to be exact, plus your penny.

Just FYI- the best pennies are actually the oldest pennies- the (almost all) copper ones from pre-1983 (or somewhere around that date).
Since the new, shiny ones are mixed metals, when they get pressed, you can see the zinc inside plus the copper color. Pennies are now 97% zinc- so there is very little copper to show when they are flattened.

They also have quater presses. They cost $1.00 (all quarters) plus the quarter to be pressed.

I always try to get new pennies. I'll have to try your way.

I always like to say that Disney even found a way to get our change. They don't want us to leave with any money. LOL

If you search for pressed penny sites, you'll find a ton of tips. Even ways to clean old pennies to make them nice and shiny for pressing.

It is addictive, my DD5 was obsessed. We got a little book to hold them and she was always on the look out for the machines. We will probably be pressing pennies and quarters for many years to come. DD5 likes the shiny pennies the best for pressing

Smile Pressed pennies are great!

We started doing this about 5 years ago and now for each trip we bring enough pennies and quarters for the trip. sometimes, we'll fill up 2 books of them during a 2week trip. It's a hit or miss thing but if you're in a store it's fun to look for them.

I save my 1981 and older pennies for the penny presses. I clean them in a vineager and salt solution. They clean up in seconds with very little work required.

I always bring a bunch of pennies with me. If I see someone looking for a clean penny for a machine, I give them one of mine. They just look so nice when you have a nice clean solid copper penny.

Here is a website regarding with some guidelines on when the pennies were made from copper:

When I saw this thread I just had to put in my '2 cents'. Been collecting Disney pressed pennies now for a couple of years. I gotta say, once you start it's very addicting. That being said, it's also one of the cheapest souvenirs you'll be able to get and the kids love doing it.

Some advice.... 1) Print out a checklist for all the pressed penny locations in the parks. You can get this off one of the Disney Pressed Penny sites. I printed it onto index cards that I can keep in my pocket and check them off as I get them. Usually there are 3 or 4 pennies per machine and I make sure to get them all, because machines are retired without notice. I also usually will reprint the list before each vacation, that way if there are any new machines I'll know it and if any are retired I'll be happy that I got them 2.) Before you leave on vacation, get yourself a couple of the containers of mini M&Ms - the kind that come in a little plastic tube with a flip top. These containers are perfect for holding your quarters/pennies. Arrange them 'quarter, quarter, penny' making it easy to get the right change when you're in front of the machine. Refill as necessary or use the empty container to hold you pressed pennies so you don't lose them. 3.) Put the penny in the machine with the head to the right. The image will then be struck on the head which looks better 4.) I don't worry too much about the year of the penny, although older ones do seem to look better. When I get home I polish them all with a product called 'Brasso' which cleans them up real nice. 5.) Don't forget to get a Pressed Penny Album or two. You're gonna want to look at them later and some pennies come in sets which can then be grouped together.

Last time we went with friends who are now also hooked on this addicting hobby. Don't forget to bring enough change and have fun collecting.
