T & T's 2nd Thanksgiving Trip - Day 4

Tuesday 24th November
Today we were off to St. Augustine.
We set off around 8.30 and travelled up the I4. We wanted to get some mileage under our belts so we didn’t stop for breakfast until about 10.00 which meant we were well out of the main tourist areas. The disadvantage of this was there were not that many places to eat. We saw a sign for Cracker Barrel and despite the fact we’d had a bad evening meal there a few years back we decided to give it a second chance as we’d heard some good report on the dis. We’re so glad we did as it proved to be one of the best breakfasts we have had.

Theresa opted for the “ Holiday sampler” which consisted of 2 eggs , bacon , sausage , hash browns, cinnamon griddle cakes , 2 buttermilk scones , grits , sawmill gravy & apple slices in caramel! To say it was huge is an understatement. Theresa loved it. I had eggs, sausage, and 3 pancakes which came with 2 bottles of maple syrup, small in comparison but I was stuffed. We washed it all down with the bottomless pot of coffee. $18 + tip. Such a good way to get set up for the day but not quite so good for the waist line. I also bought an Alan Jackson CD as he now seems to have a special products line with cracker barrel.

We left there around 11.00 and managed to get to St. Augustine at around 11.30. We parked outside the Castillo de San Marcos and looked around the fort first. The beds were planks of wood, I cannot imagine how your back would feel after a night on that, that’s if you managed to get any sleep at all.

After we’d toured the fort we had a wander around the tourists’ shops that run parallel just across the road. These were full of the normal tourist tat but there were also a few shops which had some lovely hand crafted things in. These included paintings, original design dresses & hand carved wood. There were lots of bars and the music could be heard in the street as local bands performed inside.

We decided to take a trolley tour as we didn’t have long and knew we would have more chance of seeing more if we did. The tour was good, but expensive at $23 each. The ticket would have been good value if we had been staying as it was valid for 3 days and you could hop on and off at any of the 23 stops. The driver was very good at giving a running commentary as we went around.

The city is lovely, it isn’t high rise and the buildings are all in keeping.

We left at around 4.30 and stopped at a Wal-Mart just outside of St. Augustine. We still didn’t get those bloomin' Pokémon plush toys we have been looking for in every Wal-Mart.

It was dark on the way home and there was a storm so it took us awhile to get home. On the way we saw a huge RV with a trailer behind it, on the trailer was a MPV, on the back of the MPV was a platform with a mobility scooter on it. Theresa and I both thought, Only in America.

When we got back to Kissimmee it was about 6.30 so we went to eat at Logan’s Roadhouse which is just across the road from Barefootin’. I had Steak and lobster tail while Theresa opted for the Chicken with Cheese Mash and vegetable skewer.

There was a bucket of peanuts in their shells on the table and you helped yourself. The empty shell you just throw on the floor but that didn’t come naturally to us – we put them neatly on a plate. So the server threw them on the floor for us. We finished off with mini desserts in tiny replica peanut buckets, which you keep. We both had the peanut & chocolate brownie with cream on top. It came to $37 + tip and we both really enjoyed it.

Another great day! St. Augustine looks lovely. I guess it's the Spanish architecture, but it reminds me of mix between Puerto Vallarta in Mexico AND a place close to my heart in Southern Spain called Cancelada. Something else on our Florida "to do" list...

And Richard says we have to try Logan's Roadhouse - your meal sounds amazing value for under $40!! Loving all the pics of you with cutlery BTW...

Nice to see photos of St Augustine. We've been meaning to visit for a long time, but never got round to it.

Thank the lord, a day with minimal shopping!

Maybe one day we'll escape Disney.

I wouldn't have been able to throw them on the floor either.

Excellent bit of photo journalism--well done, Theresa. The St. Augustine pictures coupled with your narration, Tony, were a virtual tour. Thanks.

Glad to see you gave Cracker Barrel a second chance and that they redeemed themselves. It's comfort food Mecca to me and a guilty pleasure I give into every now and then. Come to think of it, Tulsa has a couple of Cracker Barrels and Logan's Roadhouses, several IHOPs, a couple of Barnes & Noble stores, a half dozen Michael's, and too many Wal-Marts to count. You two would feel right at home here. AND we have Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill. And for the man who "Should Have Been a Cowboy" the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum is just down the road a bit. That road, by the way, is Route 66. Can't find all that in Florida. Y'all come, ya hear?
