I just went online to do the online check in stuff and i got hit with a $20 per bag charge each way. With 4 bags thats $160 bucks i hadnt budgted for. Does anyone have any tips or advice to get some or all of it back. I hate the fact we pay $1500 for the tickets and get hit with fee's too. I'm very disappointed. What can i do?

Most airlines now charge fees for the first and second checked bags for domestic economy class passengers. A few only charge for the second checked bag per passenger. Southwest is a notable exception; they allow two checked bags per passenger without a fee.

With US Airways, if you want to check bags, you have to pay the fee. The checked bag fees are part of their pricing structure.

The way to avoid the fees entirely is to limit yourself to only carry-on bags, being careful to stay within the carry-on rules. For most of us, this is not an option. But for some people, especially those who are staying in DVC villas or other timeshare villas with a washing machine, it's a good option.

Another option is to reduce the fees by taking fewer checked bags. That means putting clothing for more than one member of your family in each checked bag.

In the future, when picking an airline, consider the checked fees that each airline charges.

Oh, and when you pack your bags, be very careful to stay within maximum size and weight limits. If you think the checked bag fees are bad, wait until you see the excess size and weight fees.

Just for the heck of it, I went and checked how much a 45 lb package from Hershey, PA to Lake Buena Vista, FL was.. it's $30.15 and will take 2 business days to arrive.. sooooooo.. It's not cheaper..

And did you not read to see what fees the airline has? Sounds like someone didnt do research and is mad about it..

It's not like this hasnt been on the news and stuff for about the last year or so.

Went 2 years ago, and the fees where not there then. So yea i am alittle pev'd. I just looked at the us air site and yes the do have it listed in tiny print on some hard to find page. If you dont go looking for it you may never find it. So relax, not everyone is perfct.

Yea, usair.com, click on travel tools, click on baggage, click on policies..

Boy, I hope they dont change your flight / time / equipment, and all the sudden you dont have the seats you picked out / paid for when you board

But to I guess try to answer your question, all you can do is like the PP stated, utilize carry-ons and try to consolidate / do with less clothing and such in checked bags. But dont try to sneak too big of a carry on, as if they check it, you'll have to pay ANOTHER bag fee... I dont know if any of the charges are refundable (I didnt look for that, but I'm sure it's listed somewhere) if you take less then what you 'checked in' for or not..

US Airways does a better job than most other airlines in explaining the pricing and rules for baggage.

However, I can see how someone who hasn't flown in several years might not look for such a page before buying tickets.

As I noted earlier in this thread, it's possible to save some money by packing fewer checked bags -- as long as such combined loads aren't too large or heavy.

Unfortunately...MOST airlines do this now.I think Southwest is one of the only ones who does not.

JetBlue does not charge for each passenger's first checked bag:

I just did mock booking on US Airways.

TWICE (before I'd have had to put in cc information), I read that baggage fees were not included and was given links to the page that explained the fees. I would not consider that hidden away on some page.

If you've already paid for the bags going down, there is nothing you can do about that money. If you can reduce the number of bags, you can save some money on your way back.

Once again the informed consumer has an easier time when traveling. When anyone is trip planning they need to research the details. Most of the airlines now charge for luggage. You then have the choice of paying for the luggage or condensing what you bring. This way it is fair for everyone. The more you bring, the more you pay.

For you frequent Disney visitors, there's this service called Own A Locker where you can leave stuff down at Disney ready to use next time you come back. It's not part of Disney; your stuff is not stored on site but is delivered like groceries when you arrive.

YOu can keep large economy sizes of sunscreen, toothpaste, etc. you bought near Disney this way and avoid problems at the airline security.

And you might only need to bring one carry on per person.

When did you buy the tickets? If you purchased them before 8/26/09, it would be $15 for the first bag for each passenger if done online.

I don't pay the baggage fees before I get to the airport. One time they forgot to charge me and my bag got a one way flight for free.

I have to agree that I hate all the extra charges that get added to the ticket fee but everyones doing it now. If it bothers me too much, I guess I will just drive.
