Straw Market and Safety??

I've been to the Straw Market once, and want to go browse again. There are 3 of us. In light of the recent safety issues being discussed on the boards, what do you think is the safest approach? Walk along the water, approach from town? I just don't remember it that well....know I was more hassled by the hair braiders and the private tour drivers. Your insight is appreciated.

Everytime I have been to the Straw Market ( 5-6) There have been Police along the water so I would, as you said stay along the water and enter from that side.

They do not want to lose the money from the cruise ships. I am sure that they will have an increased presence in light of the latest incident.

Thanks for the reminder, but No, acting frightened is not a problem, I'm a native New Yorker from the Bronx. I just want to know what I'm up against and not "do stupid". I know it's important to travel with the <$10 watches, and not wear jewelry, flash a thick wallet or attract any attention.

We are responsible for our safety, more than anyone. As we say in our family, "Use your outstanding judgement BEFORE you have to rely on exceptional skills!" (That came from my Air Force pilot husband) Trying to add to the judgement side so the trip will be less exciting in the safety aspect.

Yes, we sort of stumbled across the Straw Market from the town side first, but returned to the ship on the water side. Then we were delayed by the islander parade. I agree, it would be best overall from the water side. Too many nooks on the street side for my comfort level.

The Straw Market is so close to the ship and there are usually lots of people in the general area. I usually only carry a small amount of money on me when I leave the ship -- and I don't carry a purse. But, I wouldn't worry about being in that area.

I couldn't wait to visit the "famous" Straw Market. So disappointed to find an indoor swap meet.

is the straw market the indoor brightly colored building near the ship in Nassau? we had to walk through it to get to our bus for the atlantis excursion and when we returned. I felt totally safe. There was one woman saying to get your hair braided ask for her, although she was unfriendly sounding so if i wanted to get my hair braided i'd know to steer clear of her.. luckily i have short hair so i'm not a target. We looked around the market on our way back and felt totally safe. I bought tea. A lot was too expensive for us. It was cute and colorful inside.

The old "straw market" has been replaced by the building as PP noted, and you must walk thru it to exit to port area. There's no other way out that I'm aware of.
