Teaching Christian's nurse about Thanksgiving
Christian's nurse, Samuel, is from Kenya. He has been in the U.S. a couple years, but he lives with a Kenyan family so they eat mostly Kenyan food(pumpkins, collards, corn meal, corn, squash,& beans.) He wanted to know about Thanksgiving, so we tried to explain it to him, the Pilgrims, the Indians, thanks for the harvest and for living through the deadly winter. He even watched a show with us about the Pilgrims.
I think something was lost in the translation: He slaughtered a goat today for Thanksgiving and his "family" is busily roasting it on a spit over a charcoal fire tonight. He says that most Kenyans don't like turkey. They eat chicken and duck, but not much turkey. So they're having roasted goat, with goat head soup tomorrow. We're giving him the day off so I gave him a plate of food to take to work tonight with a little bit of turkey, cranberry sauce, waldorf salad, mashed potatoes, and collard greens. One thing I'll give Samuel, he'll eat almost anything.

Sound good
You'll have to post what he thought of the traditional American Thanksgiving meal, I'm curious.

I think he's got the spirit right, and that's what's important. Let's hear it for secular holidays that all cultures can understand.

I was thinking the Kenyan foods you listed sound a lot like what the original Pilgrims would have eaten! I'm sure if they had goat, they would have eaten that too. (Deer, of course, was a main meat dish in 1621, so not just fowl
