Refurbished laptop as a gift?

wondering if anyone would buy a refurbished laptop as a gift for a young adult?
my dd18 needs a laptop for school, and the refurb's are about $200 cheaper, they come with a 1 yr war.(limited)
what are your thoughts?
She does not need the fastest, fanciest computer on the market, something to use for school - research, papers, etc, and some fun stuff like music and movies, etc.

thank you

Tina

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. If it has all the features you want/need at a great price, then go for it.

Remember that "refurbished" does not necessarily mean "used". Many of these are items that were purchased and returned in open boxes. Once a box for electronics is opened, it can no longer be sold as "New". Lots of these items are actually BRAND new; just had their boxes opened once before.

I agree that I would probably buy one for our DD; however, I always struggle giving a refurbished item as a gift. I did give my mom a refurbished landline phone for her birthday once but that was only because it was the only way to get the item.

I am not sure if this is the case for all refurbished but the phone came in a brown box, no fancy packaging (meaning retail) at all.

Helped solve the mystery of Edward's mipple. My parents were both hippies, and I turned out to be the responsible one. I squealed and then I squished it.

I'll buy refurbished, but not as a gift. I did buy my son a refurbished computer because he needed a computer, but it wasn't a gift.

I would definitely buy one, but I'm not sure about giving it as a gift. If your DD is one of those kids that would be happy to get *any* laptop, and understands that times are a little tougher than they've been, I definitely would. If she's expecting a brand new MacBook, I wouldn't.

Especially for a family member, I wouldn't hesitate to get a refurb.

Now my DS chose a "used" game for a friend the other day for their bday and I did feel a little weird about that and told the mom that he chose the gift (we also included a gift card too so I didn't tell him he couldn't do it).

I bought two refurbished netbooks for my daughters for Christmas, however, I made sure they were not used and marked. The ones I got were open box and in mint condition and packaged the same as brand new ones.

Outside the immediate family, I'm not sure I would get refurbished as a gift.
