18 cruise passengers robbed on Bahamas excursion

Thought I would pass this along from another cruise board.

This article is in the Bahamas Tribune, involving RCCL & DCL passengers.

I guess we will be extra careful when we go, but these things can happen anywhere, anytime.

18 DCL and RCCL passengers robbed at gunpoint in Nassau

Yikes! This was on an excursion. I guess Earth Village is a remote area, but still...

This is really a shame. The poor people must has been scared to death. No doubt they were probably with kids too. And, it just doesn't do the area any good when they rely so heavily from cruise ship tourism.

The two Op's of the identical threads posted them at the exact same time (1:00 pm).....usually someone posts a bit before or after the other!!! I merged them as they are on the same exact subject. The inner workings of the board put the thread posted first (mostly likely by seconds!) as the title thread.

This is certainly a shame, I would believe that folks are more willing this could happen to tourists on their own but never part of a tour group. We are pretty seasoned travelers and I wouldn't have counted on something like this.....pretty brash to hijack a tour group. I hope that the Bahama Goverment acts swiftly. ALOT of money is in the balance here. It would only take a few incidents like this to have cruise lines stop visiting, More cruise lines visiting only the private islands, although that wouldn't completly stop crime. We have personally never had problems with Jamaica, and after a few stops there we don't have any reason to go back, however I have had friends come back convinced they were running for their lives. WE love the Bahamas and wouldn't want to think about not going back!...that is indeed the problems with the little islands, big population all trying to get a hand on the leading source of money...tourism, regardless that it's criminal...just a shame.

I'm all about responsibility while on vacation, I think that is when folks are most likely to be a victim but I don't think that I would have seen that coming, It appears to be premeditated, thats the scarry part

If you read the blog, it says there was a robbery on the segway tour. Yikes! We did that tour before and loved it. We were planning to do it again, but now I think they will take a pass. Last time we actually got off the ship in Nassau (not last cruise...trip before in the fall) I felt very, very uncomfortable. I've never felt that way before, but it was creepy. I was especially nervous when a couple of local-looking guys bumped into DH in the aisle of a nearly deserted store. There was plenty of room, yet they still bumped him, maybe wanting to grab his wallet if it had been in his pocket? Dunno, but that was enough for me. Back to the ship!

Wow! I was getting ready to write a post about how I got a call letting me know that our Segway tour for our upcoming cruise was canceled. Now I know why!

Those poor people. It must have been terrifying.

DH and I were trying to figure out what else we would like to do in Nassau. Think we'll stay on the boat.

That explains why we got the same call from DCL Saturday evening, telling us the Segway tour was canceled. They told us the vendor canceled, but now I'm thinking DCL was being proactive, and canceled for safety reasons. I have to agree with inkkognito about something just not feeling right the last time we were in Nassau. Nothing specific happened to us, but I just had that "gut" feeling. Looks like we'll probably stay on the ship on Thursday. At least I know we'll be safe at Quiet Cove (ok except for maybe all the goodies and the drinks of the day! ).

Thank you for taking the time to report this.

We will be going to Nassau for our fourth time on a Disney Wonder cruise.

In the past we have done various tours. One time we hired ‘Big D’ to take us around the island in a limo. We were thinking of doing this again or going to Atlantis but not anymore.

We were already worried do to the tourist robbery at the queen’s staircase last month.

We felt if we stayed in a group we would be safe with our kids.

This article is about a tour and it was 18 people.

The risk on this island has increased. This island is no longer safe no matter your numbers.

I’m not taking my family into this dangerous situation.

We have made the decision to stay onboard, spend the day on the ship at the pool and other onboard activities and spend more money back in Orlando Florida after the cruise.

PS: I assume Disney knows what happened and reads this board. I think they are not allowed to open shops in port due to contractual obligations.

I hope they increase onboard activates in port as I assume some people that would have gone ashore will now simply stay onboard.

I would have no idea how big of a impact this will be but we are a family of 5.

I'm certainly not going to think less of anyone taking precautions to make their family safe, however why would I wall myself off from enjoyable activities because of an incident?, certainly an infrequent incident and maybe completly random. I have visited Nassau multiple times and have never felt unsafe. I would suppose that if events like this continue to happen then I would think differently but I still enjoy Atlantis, the pirate musem, straw market and Senior Frogs enough to take the very minor risk of walking down town, especially when large cruise ships are in town. It will indeed be sad if this type of criminal behavior continues because it would spell the end of Nassau and we have met no one but good people on that island. Criminal activity ocures everywhere, taking effective precautions still are the best way to defend against such activity.......think about it, if we simply stopped going to areas because of crime where would we go then? We would just wall off our property and stand behind closed doors with guns.......look I'm not trying to critisize you for taking precautions for defending your family and if that means staying on the ship then that is whats right for you and your family..........If this criminal activity happens on a more frequent basis then I will take up a spot near the pool with you.....but for right now i'm not making any plans to change our trip to Atlantis on Our DCL cruise in Feb 2010

Scuba, I just wanted to follow up my above post.

I genuinely believe the situation at this island is seriously deteriorating.

We are not going to raise our kids in a padded room. We are flying to Florida, going on a cruise and going to Disney World.

We are going to have a great time. We have been to Nassau before.

Right now, our plan is to remain onboard and have fun doing that because of these crimes.

Besides the news reported crimes there are many minor street levels hustlers, pick pocket crimes that simply go unreported. You go to cabbage beach. You rent lounge chares from some guy on the beach. You buy a drink with all day refills. An hour or so goes buy. Some other guy comes up and says you have been reclining in his chars and demands payment. The guy that has promised to refill your beverage is no longer around.

I could go on but you get the idea.
