If your DD is in high school band or choir

do the girls have to wear a long, black skirt? My dd is in concert band and the band director told them they all need to wear a long, black skirt and a white tuxedo shirt for every performance. We had to go to American Commodore Tuxedo for the shirt. For the skirt, we are on our own. I searched the mall today for a skirt that would work. No one had long black skirt that would fit a petite sized girl (lots of short, black skirts and dresses) .Anything long and black was in womens sizes.

This is not the time of year I want to go spend hours looking for something. Tell me where to get it and I will or give me an order form to fill out.
Does anyone else have a dd in the same boat? Do you know where I can find a long, black skirt? I did look online and saw some but I hate buying something I can't see that might end up not working. I think my dd has a 25" (she would only let me measure with 3 shirts on along with her pj pants) and needs something 33" long. It can't be velour/velvet.

I have a son in band but I feel your pain-- we had to find just the right shade of black dress pants in a very hard to find size

As for long skirts, dont do the mall stores: try Kohl's or even Target. I don't shop at Walmart, but I think they may have that there...

I have been lucky even at Goodwill for either play costumes or band outfits.

Not sure if you sew or not but my mom would make my choir skirts until our director decided to buy dresses for us.

There are some very easy patterns out there.

I was in choir in high school. I had to wear a black skirt. No pants, it HAD to be a black skirt. And a white top. No length specified but I had a long one and then got a shorter, above the knee skirt that I liked much better.

I would think that it might be easier to order online and hope for the best...not easy finding a long black skirt in a kids size! Our school do not require the girls to wear skirts, it was challenged a few years back as "sexist" since the boys can wear pants so girls can wear pants or a skirt-their choice.

When my DD was in orchestra, she also had to wear a long black skirt. We usually had our best luck at Macy's.

I was in band about 10 years ago and we had to wear that. I got a skirt from Land's End that I still have and I can wear it to work even now - it's held up that well.

I found this; it's pricey but if it holds up even half as well as the one I have from them, it could work out well.

Didn't the teacher let you know back in September what clothes they needed for concerts?

I will look at landsend and online at Macys. No, we just found out about this. The kids didn't even know which band they'd be in until 1 1/2 weeks ago. I thought outfits were provided for both concert and symphonic or I would have known to start looking for a long, black skirt. Boys all get tuxedos provided. Girls are NOT allowed to wear pants or I'd have a much easier job. DD is tiny and often mistaken for an 8th grader so that is part of our problem. I do not sew and I don't think I have time to have something custom made since the concert is December 10th.

I need this extra job to do like I need a hole in my head! I have 22 coming for Thanksgiving dinner including 9 who will be sleeping over for 3 nights.

Wow! At our school students have to buy their "uniform" chorus outfit at the beginning of the year. They use the same dresses or pants/vests for the duration of their time in HS. I think the dress may have cost about $40. They wear high heeled black shoes of their choice.

Our director found it MUCH easier to go this route. It has completely eliminated the pants that are too long, the vest with sparkles, the dress that's too low cut, and the skirt that's actually navy instead of black. We take care of this in late August and any student who does NOT order their uniform is not allowed to perform. If they miss a performance they get an F, unless there was a legitimate reason(death in the family or serious illness of the student.) So far we have 100% compliance.

I think you need to get some help from the people staying at your house and/or coming for Thanksgiving dinner...surely one of them can sew or has a skirt you can borrow (or that they can give you) or knows of some store that carries an appropriate skirt in the right size.

agnes!
PS - Can you contact someone who was in the band last year?

Try a uniform store! Caterer's wear this for their work, and it is much cheaper to get from a uniform store. In my area Burlington Coat Factory also sells this stuff at a reasonable price.

We had some events we needed a skirt for and some we had pants, I hate those stupid tux shirts! lol best of luck!

When my oldest dd was in middle school they had to wear black and white. but it could be a skirt or pants. When she was in high school, they provided the gowns the girls had to wear.
