Food Review on the Wonder 11/12-11/15 with pics

While planning for the trip DH and I just took, I was constantly looking for food pics and reviews, so I thought I would pay it forward with a review of my own.

The Cast:

Me, DW - loves to cook and eat great food, but not picky or a food snob.

DH - will eat just about anything

We went on this cruise to celebrate our 20th anniversary and left the kids at home. We were looking forward to quiet time, sunshine and great food. We got our wish with only one out of three.

The weather did not cooperate as we had mostly cloudy, chilly weather the entire trip. Even on Castaway Cay, it was too cold for us to swim or enjoy the bits of sun.

The food was plentiful, but not great. A few things were fantastic, but most of it was middle-of-the-road, and some of it was downright bad. I'll go meal by meal as best I can remember. We tried to take pics of everything, but forgot a few things.

DAY 1 EMBARKATION BUFFET

We chose to eat at Parrot Cay as it was windy and cold. We were promptly seated by a friendly CM who noted us talking with the family behind us in the very short line. We were given the choice to eat alone or with them. We chose to eat with the other family who were very nice with two very well-behaved little girls. I ordered a Bahama Mama which was the drink of the day. Only noticed when we got our receipt at the end of the cruise that I was charged $7.50, I thought the drink of the day was supposed to be 1/2 price, but never questioned the charge while on the ship. The drink was very strong, but the perfect tropical, fruity beginning for our cruise.

Here is DH's first plate which includes cole slaw, tomato salad, rice pilaf, broccoli, roasted potatoes, shrimp, roast beef and sweet and sour pork. I had the same with the addition of fried tilapia and a pasta dish with artichokes and mushrooms. The shrimp was a disappointment as it was not fresh. The pork and tilapia were excellent. I also enjoyed the beef, but DH got a piece that was very fatty. We also tried fresh baked flatbread and macaroni and cheese which was very good. I was excited to try the strawberry mint soup as I have fond memories of a similar soup from 1900 Park Faire from a number of years ago, but found it to be too sweet.
Time to get the kids to bed, so I'll continue tomorrow night when DH is home to link the pics. Sorry, I'm not very computer savvy and can't figure out how to link the pics.

Embarkation buffet part 2

Here's my plate. Everything was good except the cold shrimp. The tilapia is covered with a shrimp mango salsa - it was delicious.

Desserts - First plate: cream puff, fruit tart and peach cobbler (yum!) Second plate: peach cobbler and chocolate mousse cake with cherries. Parfait was white chocolate, notice the straw - it was chocolate! That was good too! We loved this meal and decided that it was one of our favorites of the cruise.

Off to parent/teacher conference... will post more later.

Dinner at Animator' Palate

I had the flatbread appetizer and DH had the tomato and portobello mushrooms with polenta. I only had a few bites of mine and DH doesn't remember eating his, so I would not recommend either. On a side note, I had read that the wait staff was very attentive and eager to please and that guests were encouraged to order something else if they did not like the item they ordered. Not once were we offered a different dish even though several times I only ate one bite. To be fair, we did not ask either as there was still plenty of food that we were stuffed.

We forgot to take pics of the appetizers. DH wants me to comment that we had to pay attention to our tablemates. We were seated with two other couples who were travelling without their children. We thought they were very nice and thought Disney did a great job of matching us up. One of them was a fellow diser - Hi markmyboy!

Here is a pic of my butternut soup which was fantastic. It was creamy and not too sweet, just perfect.

DH's confetti tomato salad which he enjoyed.

We both had the same entree - slice fillet of beef with wasabi mashed potatoes and bok choy stir fry. I was nervous about the potatoes as I am not a fan of spicy food, so asked if I could have plain. I was given the plated meal as described and a small dish with two more servings of plain mashed. I ate very little of the potatoes, because the meat and greens were just too good and after finishing them off I was getting full. The meat was perfectly rare as ordered and very tender.

DH had the warm apple crumble for dessert and said it was his favorite dessert of the cruise.

I had the dessert trio of cranberry and orange cheesecake, double fudge chocolate cake and strawberry sable. The only one I really enjoyed was the cranberry and orange cheesecake. One of our table mates ordered the full sized version.

Looking forward to seeing your pictures. Since my hubby didnt' go along, I only took the girls to sit down dinner once, animators.... so want to see what food I missed. Except for the first day, the weather seemed perfect for us. We went to the Atlantis Aquaadventure Friday and enjoyed the beach at CC on Saturday. High 70's/low 80's fits me perfectly though... my kids are ready to move there!!! I also had the beef at Animators and enjoyed it very much. My 10 year old food network fan even knew there was rosemary sprig in the mashed potatoes

Were you on our cruise? I'm glad that you had fun and enjoyed the weather. It was a bit chilly for us. But we were very happy to be on vacation and thought the ship was absolutely beautiful. We have since been home and showed off our pics to the family on Thanksgiving. My parents (who have cruised many times but not with DCL) could not believe how big our stateroom, and especially the bed, was. I'll post more of the review tomorrow evening. Just finally sitting down after a very busy holiday weekend with extended family. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We have much to be thankful for here.
