OT What is your favorite Mash Potato and Sweet Potato Recipe?

I am making both for Thanksgiving. Normally I use half and half, real butter, salt and pepper in my mashed potatos. I have also heard of using cream cheese in them as well but have never tried it.

For my sweet potaoes I just boil the potatos, drain, then top them with mini marshmallows and pop them under the broiler for as bit. Is there something else I should be doing to make these babies pop with favor? I was wondering what everyone else does for these traditional dishes. So please feel free to pass along your favorites. Thanks!

I make the Candied Yams/Sweet potatoes from Betty Crocker. I boil, peel and slice the sweet potatoes and then make the candy sauce (double batch) that is brown sugar, butter and water. I serve it in a corningware casserole dish, and it can be popped in the micro if it needs to be heated up right before dinner. It is fabulous and the candy gravy seeps into the turkey and stuffing and everything is great...and that really helps if the turkey is a bit dryish.

Oh, I wanted to add that some folks add in the Hidden Valley Ranch powder into mashed potatoes to jazz up the flavor, but I don't have a recipe for this.

Mashed Potatoes

I boil 7 cloves of garlic along with 2 pounds of potatoes and then add a head of cauliflower at the end of the boiling. Drain it all and mash together with a brick of cream cheese and a cup of sour cream and salt and pepper. Put it in a greased casserole dish (usually have to put it in two dishes) and top with butter and cracker crumbs. At this stage it can be put in the fridge or frozen. Heat in the oven at 350 until hot through (can take up to an hour).
Always a hit!

Sweet Potatos-
I bake 6-8 large potatoes till soft. Peel and mash (I use a mixer) with-2 sticks real butter, a dash of cinnamon, a little vanilla, a cup or so of brown sugar, a little salt and enough canned milk to smooth them out.
Put in a large baking dish.
Mix with you hands a cup or so of brown sugar, a stick of butter (soft) a cup or two of chopped pecans. Sprinkle on top and bake till hot. About 45 min.
These are so good but we only make them one a year like this!!!!

Mashed -I just cook my potatoes, drain well and mash (mixer again for me) with a stick or butter (only for thanksgiving), little salt, some pepper and canned whole milk. Sometimes I add a little sour cream or even a little cream cheese!

yummy.

I never learned how to make sweet potatoes, because myself and all my family don't like them no matter HOW they were made. One year, my mom was coming and loves them pretty much ANY way they are made. So I bought some, washed them, peeled them, chopped them into chunks, poured on some maple syrup, a few slices of butter here and there, tossed on some brown sugar, tossed on a few marshmallows, cooked in a casserole dish in the oven next to my green bean casserole. Baked them for quite a while, but since they were in chunks they cooked nicely, and didn't take forever.

We ran out of sweet potatoes that day, before anything else!! Even my kids were chowing down on them, getting seconds and thirds. So now the kids ask specifically for me to make them, for every holiday.
