Looking for someone with trading experience
Hello!
We currently plan to have anywhere between 46 and 106 points left over at the end of this year. The main problem is that we don't intend to go to Disney next year. Our plan was to save up our annual 210 points for a year and then go extra long with 420 points the following year. I guess the problem is that taking a year off makes it impossible for us to bank those 46 (up to 106) points that we apparently won't use this year, as they would have to be used in the next year when we don't plan on going. I was thinking of renting them out, but I really don't have any experience with that and am a bit concerned about the thought of it. My other thought was to trade into RCI (That is the company, right?). - Is 100 points enough to trade into RCI? - What do you think I could get with that amount? - Is it worth the trouble? I definitely don't want to lose those points. But at the same time, if someone says that 100 points will only allow me to get a studio in an undesirable place for 2 nights (with added fees attached), then I will rethink my plan. |

experience with RCI
I have never traded out with DVC points, but I have 10+ years experience trading my parents' top-rated Orlando unit with RCI. DVC should trade equivalent or better. The key is to request 1 year out (for summer, we start looking right after Labor Day the prior year) and to request an area that is likely to have a good supply We have VERY good luck trading into Hilton Head at 1 year out for the next summer. Williamsburg is a very easy trade. The type of unit you get is a set by DVC, based upon unit size and season. 100 points will not get you much. You would do better to deposit enough points to get at least a 1 BR in a season that you can use--otherwise, it really is not worth it, IMHO.
Realize that getting prime Carib. in the winter/spring, ski locations out West for Christmas, SW Fla winter/Spring is very tough as many use their units and MANY people want these and have likely had searches ongoing at the 2 year mark. Getting on the "waitlist" is not like a WL with DVC--it simply means you are starting a RCI search----and very often means you might never get a match if it is popular place without a large supply of units. Another "safer" option is to transfer the points--no rental contract, no cancellations, no calling for ME, dining plans etc,.---if you are within your banking window, you can transfer to another member and then they can bank them for use the next year. You can only do 1 transfer in/out per UY, but there might be someone looking for extra points for a big family trip, etc. Good luck. Elaine Last edited by ldo; 11-22-2009 at 12:50 PM. |

Probably best renting your points, then putting the proceeds toward the lodging for another trip. Can find some amazing non-DVC rental deals these days, with many of the rentals going for right around the MFs that the owner pays.

Here is the World Passport Collection point chart:
Studio. 106 Low/123 Mid/134 High 1 BR.... 124 Low/144 Mid/160 High 2 BR.....207 Low/252 Mid/270 High 3 BR.....276 Low/317 Mid/349 High In most cases, I'd assume that the resort will be High season for planning purposes. If they end up being less you can always be pleasantly surprised! The seasons are decided by the individual resorts. I think you would need to "bank" the actual number of points into the World Passport Collection and not just put in 100 points towards a future reservation. MS can better advise about that. If you want to try using RCI (World Passport), you might need to use a few current points in order to bank enough points into the system. Once banked you will have up to 2 years to get and use the reservation. I'd plan on putting in at least 134 points (for a studio) and see what looks good to you with the help of MS. There will also be a $95 transaction fee when the reservation is made. Here is a link to the DVC/RCI resort information.

After thinking it through a bit and calculating what we will have left over (75 points), I think we will look into transferring/renting them. RCI seems like a bigger headache than we are willing to undertake. Thank you for your insight!!!!!!!!!!!
