Beam refers to the width at the boat/ship's widest point (there is traditionally a beam that runs across at that point)
Draft is how much water is displaced (or how deep the boat goes down when placed in the water) - this is important when you are navigating as you don't want to take a boat with a 5 foot draft into 3 feet of water.

Thanks, Lisa on LI! I took sailing lessons in my 20's but I am not good at it. Guess I was meant to be a landlubber. LOL (Lived 37 years in San Diego)
