What to see and do in St. Maarten?

Thinking about renting a car in St. Maarten to see the island for our upcoming Christmas cruise. Will have my husband's parents with us. For those who have been there (we have not), do you have some recommendations on what we should plan to see or do?

Maho Beach is very cool. It's right near the airport and the planes literally fly in right over your head. It's a small beach with a dangerous undertow, but very cool to see the planes right there! There's also a little beach bar there too. The Sunset Beach Bar......yummy Pina Coladas!

Maho is a definite! The pics and videos are amazing of the planes coming in and taking off. Any other suggestions? How did you get around the island? Rental car or other?

Thanks for your response.

We uses Bernards Tours last January and have booked him again for this January. He is AWESOME! It was $35pp (+tip of course), and he took us shopping, a little pit stop to hold some sea urchins, to a quiet little beach, to Maho Beach to see the planes, AND his van was stocked with Rum Punch, Beer, Juice, Soda, and Water. We had an awesome time. Worth every penny. He does do private tours for a little more $$. His website is www.bernardstours.com if your interested.

I did Benard's tour. It was very nice, but I only booked him because I really just wanted a way to go to Maho Beach to see the planes. The rest I didn't want or need...although, I did love the stops where they pulled out creatures out of the ocean for us to hold.

If we return to St. Marteen, we would only go to Maho Beach. If you're a beach person than there are a lot of nices beaches around.

Maho was amazing!!! We rented a car and just drove around and took pictures, then spent the afternoon there. It was wonderful and the airplane pictures and video we have are amazing!

Was just in St. Martin in October, we also did bernard tours. They were awesome. We had 7 of us so we had our own guide and van. Would do it again when we go next year.

Orient Beach

A long time ago, we did the Orient Beach excursion over on the French side of the island. Very nice day, good food, waves a little larger. One word of caution--it's French --and officially a nude beach! We had no real sightings other than a couple of people walking by that you would have rather have had more clothing. ugh. Sorry guys, no hotties. Still, I'm glad we went even with the kids. We braided my girl's hair and had a nice time-it's still a Disney excursion-so not bad. I don't know if they still go there as an excursion--ok, I just checked and it is! I recommend it if you want a nice day at the beach.

Do you have to travel to Maho Beach, or can you get there right off the ship? How do you go about getting to Maho Beach? Thanks

A taxi or bus or a rental car.

Also, there is schedule of which planes land on what day and time. I'll see if I can find it.

This helps you schedule the best time to visit Maho Beach.

We took a tour and Bernards times it out so you can see the planes leave/take off. We must have seen half a dozen while we were there. But, I do know there is a schedule of the planes taking off/landing and at what times that is written on a "surfboard/chalkboard" at the Sunset Beach Bar right there on Maho beach.
