Pet Peeve: Echo Posts

This is a stupid and silly pet peeve, but here goes. It's really annoying to me when I respond to a post and hours alter someone else comes along and posts exactly the same thing without even acknowledging that the answer has been given in a previous post. I call it echo posting. Sometimes two people post the same thing at the same time, or sometimes a response is posted followed by other conflicting answers and then a post to agree with a PP and counter other responses is appropriate. But if a question is asked and answered, what's the point of posting the exact same answer directly below the first response three hours later? I can only assume that just as some people just like to hear themselves talk, some (probably the same) people just like to read their own posts.

Do you know what's even more annoying? When the OP quotes the echo post and issues an effusive thank you without any reference to the original response.

Thank you. Go about your business. Nothing more to see here.

So, the fact that you said it first means no one else can say it?

Someone had to do it .

Yeah, echo posting (good name!) bugs me, too. Especially if a thread hasn't even gotten very long (which often happens because of echo posting). The only time I do it is when I'm posting right about the same time as another poster. If someone else has already said what I think, I quote them or at least say "I agree with the other poster(s) who said. . . .".

But there are other things that bug me more, like when thread starters post some kind of hot topic or pose a question and then never come back and reply to the replies.

New Rule:
The first person to reply on any thread needs to quote the OP. That way when someone does the delete of nevermind edit we know what was there. Now Repeat after me.

I think the OP is bothered when people repeat what she said and they get the credit for it and not her.

In the grand scheme of things I don't find this to be a big deal, alot of people share the same views so if you agree and thank someone, aren't you thanking them all anyway

I think of posts on a message board the same as a real life conversation. Just because somebody said something earlier doesn't mean that a latecomer knows that or shouldn't be able to say what she is thinking.

This seems to be a very divisive issue for many people. Some people are quite adament that you can't repeat something once it's been said, and you can't participate in the conversation unless you've gone back and read everything that's already been said. Not every person has time or ability to go back and read everything and, if it were a spoken conversation, there wouldn't even be a record of what's already been said.

And as someone whose posts are very often ignored as if I'm not even in the conversation at all, I've made it a point to not hang my self-worth on being recognized for what I say on a message board.

This is totally unrelated, but I just wanted to say "Hi, neighbor!" to the OP (I'm in Des Peres).

And nobody else had yet, so I feel safe in doing so.

I already posted, but I will say now that I can see both sides. The OP has been around long enough and posted enough to have a valid opinion, even if others see it differently. So no need to jump her/him.
Other things bug me more, but there are instances where this echo posting does bother me.

This might happen more often on the information boards about the theme parks, resorts, etc., when someone is asking for specific information. For instance, someone asks where to buy Mickey ears that have your name on the back. Someone posts the list of places. Then a more well-known member or moderator comes along and names the same places. The OP of the thread then quotes the well-known person and specifically thanks them. If I were the one who gave the information first, I'd be a little bugged about it, too. I guess I'm selfish, but to me it just seems like common courtesy not to overlook someone who tried to help .

Now if someone says, "Where is the best pizza on property?", and 20 people name Pizzafari, 5 name Pinocchios, 10 name the Boardwalk, etc., then I don't see it as echo-posting. Or if someone asks for thoughts (such as on this thread), then I don't see it necessarily as echo-posting. Those types of threads are asking for opinions.

And then there are threads that fall somewhere in the middle as far as being fact or opinion. Sometimes it bugs me on those, and sometimes not. Just depends on the topic and discussion.

Of course not. It just means I don't see the point of repeating the same answer and might be annoyed by it.

Thus the concept of a "pet" peeve is illuminated for us all.

Yes, he is. And it's not a big deal, just a pet peeve. Credit isn't really the issue, just a slight amplifier of the original annoyance.

Opinion threads are completely different. Threads where there is a debate over which information is correct are different. Posting the same answer with new information or personal observations is different.
