What to do with an old 5 day hopper?

We have an old (5 years) 5-day child park hopper that was never used. I'm trying to figure out the most effective use of it.

We have a trip planned where I expect we'll visit the parks 7 days; maybe 8. Given the way Disney frontloads the cost of MYW tickets, it's not that useful.

I think the upgrade value is about $150, which means I could upgrade to an 8-day hopper for about an additional $120. That seems preferable to buying a 2 or 3 day ticket to supplement the 5-day hopper for $140 or $199.

Any other clever ideas about what I could do with it to maximize the value?

EDIT: It occurs to me that technically, this is not an "upgrade," but a credit. I know that sometimes the terminology gets confused.

Thanks. That link says:

"If you have unused pre-MYW tickets you can use the original Disney selling price of one ticket as a credit to the purchase price of any current ticket with a selling price equal to or higher than the value of the old ticket. However, it probably will make more economic sense to use the ticket for entries. This will depend a lot on what the determined dollar value is."

So, I think I could get about $150 in credit for it, because that was the purchase price. Obviously, that's worth a lot less than a 5-day, never expire hopper is worth today. (That would cost $341 today.) I'm just not sure what good that does me?

maybe just save it for a shorter future trip? I guess then you have the problem that its a child's ticket. It seems like your only option is to apply it as a credit to a 7-8 day ticket.

I know that with some tickets, you are better off using them once, and THEN upgrading them. I'm not sure if you can do this with the Pre MYW ones though.

If you only get 1 day passes for everyone on the trip you are planning, you could upgrade the ones that need to be for the number of days you want. The child 1 day could be kept for future use. Use the old five day once, then upgrade it to what ever you want. You will get the current value of the 5 day and old tickets were park hoppers. You will probably save some by using the old 5 day. The least you will get is the savings plus a new 1 day pass for the future. Just an idea. Also, the old ticket is probably a park hopper as well. YOu will or should save something because of that as well.

Is it a MYW ticket or not? If it is a MYW ticket then the best possible value would be to use the ticket first, then upgrade it the ticket you want. The potential problem there is the fact that it's a child's ticket and you may not have any children left that could use it. If you do still have someone under 10, then let them use the ticket to enter the park, then go to guest services and upgrade it to a 7 or 8 day child's park hopper. That would only cost $3.19 for a 7 day or $6.38 for an 8 day.

If you don't have anyone under 10 or it's not a MYW ticket then you're right that you would only get a credit for the amount you originally paid. It looks like a 2004 non MYW child's 5 day park hopper ticket was $192 or $200 (depending on when in 2004 it was purchased), so if it's really 5 years old then it might have a bit more value than you thought. Assuming it has a $200 value you'd still be looking at a little over $100 to upgrade to an adult 7 or 8 day hopper ticket. Keep in mind that you don't need to keep the hopper option if you don't want it... that would save $52 plus tax on whatever you decide to upgrade it to. That's probably the best option for you if you want to use it right now.

Thanks. I guess that's not a terrible option. It's a pre-MYW ticket. I seem to remember it was not quite as much as $200, but it's going back a long way now.

It just occurred to me that one other thing we can do with it is use it at Disneyland. We go there more often for shorter trips. I think maybe that's what I'll do. Even if it's worth $200, each admission to disneyland is worth more than $40.

I don't think they let you exchange tickets (or receive their value) anymore. Years ago, I think on our 1986 cross country trip to DL, we had 1 day passes for WDW (received them as a promo for free, but they had value on them) at DL they used the value amount and it ended up being almost a 3 day there!! It was a good deal for us. I seem to recall that you can't do this anymore.

They do let you go day by day, exchanging WDW tickets for DLR tickets. I don't know about older-than-MYW tickets, though.

But I would think the best use of this old ticket is to just hang onto it until it can be used on a trip where you're only spending 5 days in the parks at WDW.
