Affordable places that transfer old videos to DVD?

I have some of the old Hi8 video tapes I'd like to transfer to a DVD. A local place wanted to charge $25 per video tape, no matter how many minutes are recorded on it (yes, you heard that right, not per DVD) Does anyone know of a decent company with fair pricing that offers this service?

And for those of you who've done this -- how do they handle the non-recorded space on the tapes? I realize this probably sounds stupid, but I won't just end up with a bunch of "dead space" on a dvd will I? I have a few tapes that are only about 15 minutes worth of recording, so I'd hate to have to pay for a bunch of DVD's that barely have any minutes on them.

Thank you!

I actually just bought a VCR to DVD recorder from HSN (sorry I can't link to it - work has that site blocked). I don't know if it will do the Hi8 but you might be able to find that out from the HSN website. It was only $200 and once I got it I found out that it will also play back VHS and DVD's - I needed a DVD player anyway so I got a bonus! It was about $199 - I haven't hooked it up yet - it's been a busy week and I just got it on Tuesday. I THINK it's a JVC model.

I don't recall the price, but Costco was the cheapest that I had seen.

you should just be able to get cable from your camcorder to your pc, use some kind of capture software to record and edit, then burn it with your dvd player. You might need extra hard drive, usually 1hr of video equals about 4GB.

Do you have a college around where you live? You might be able to find a person who is in that field who might want to do something like that for money on the side.

I know a lot of people who like Adobe premiere, Vegas and I think a few have used Pinnacle (buggy) to capture the video and edit.

I bought a VHS to DVD recorder unit at Best Buy for about $140 to record our old VHS-C tapes. After I finished my tapes, I sold the unit on Craigs List for $80.

I used www.ScanDigital.com just recently to convert my Hi8 tapes to DVD and they did a good job. Not sure if they might be willing to combine your tapes into one DVD or not, though.

My husband has done this with all of his 8mm tapes on to, I believe a mini-dv. He didn't do them to a dvd since the dv's can hold more movies and they should last longer. He then hooks up the video camera to our computer and transfers the video on to it. Then once he edits in iMovie, he can save to a dvd player for his family. He has used them for several years and has been very pleased. We don't live near them. He mails them the video and they do the work. They send him an invoice and mail him the mini-dv once he pays. They have to invoice after since it's based on how long the video is.
