Discovery Island and Persian Resort
Anyone know anything about these two places?
When I look at WDW on Google Maps, I can see a bunch of buildings on Discovery Island in Bay Lake, and I'm wondering what they are. And, when I look north of the Contemporary Resort there is, what looks like, a maintenance yard, but Google Maps labels it Disney's Persian Resort. Is there (or was there once) a Persian themed resort for that area?

discovery Island was an attraction prior to Animal Kingdom
It was kind of a mini AK. Had birds, critters, flamingo's and such. But once AK opened, no reason to visit and was closed. The buildings still stand vacant. Actually according to the story, Walt was flying over the land and spotted the Island and decided because of that Island, that's where he wanted to build WDW. So it has a unique place in Disney history. Persian Resort, was a proposed original resort the never happened. Don't know if it became Poly but one of those that never made it off the drawing table.

The Persian Resort was going to go north of the Contemporary with its own Monorail spur then head into Tomorrow Land.

Just north of the Contemporary parking lot is the "chiller plant" for the Contemporary a/c, and just north of that is a parking lot for Magic Kingdom cast members. Beyond that are WDW service buildings including maintenance, laundry, set design, etc.

I was thinking the Persian resort was supposed to be between the Poly and Grand Floridian. The land turned out to be too unstable to build on.

There were going to be 3 other resorts when the MK first opened. The Asian the Venetian and the Persian. The Venetian was going to go in between the Poly and the CR. The Persian was going on to Bay Lake north of the CR. and the Asian was going where the GF is now.

After doing some web research, check out this link:
http://land.allears.net/blogs/jacksp...e_at_walt.html There is some pre 1971 artwork from Disney as a preview of what is to be when Walt Disney World finally opens. Enjoy. Robert

I, for one, would love to see all of these original concept resorts built (even if they're not in the original places). |

The Persian and Asian ones sound cool Though the Greek one would be cool too.
