Do two rudes make a polite?

There was an article in my local paper today asking the above question. I've been reading so many posts about "rude" people in the park and the way people handle them. I personally do not believe that being rude to someone being rude is the way to go..but I find many other people feel it's the only way to go....

So...how about you?

on vacation? I just smile and nod and go on my way, I can't waste my vacation time with incompetence from others.

It takes as much effort to be rude as it does to be nice....so, I guess it just depends on how you want to spend your time.

Whenever someone is rude to me and I'm rude back I always regret it later but feel good when I give back what I got.

When someone is rude to me and I brush it off I feel like a chump who's been taken advantage of but I usually don't feel bad about it later.

Overall I prefer to be nice and not be rude back. But it's hard.

As I teach my DD and now my GS troop, I am unable to control anyone else's actions. I am only able to control my reaction to them. Most times I can't be bothered to get upset by rude people. I try to let it roll off my back.

Now bad drivers...that's a whole other thread.

Being rude back:
Is it right? No.
Is it satisfying? Yes!

I usually try to kill them with kindness as the expression goes.

It interesting because I have tried both (being rude back and being kind) and sometimes your "forced" to go rude.

Good point Bill...that happens to me too. I always feel bad if I snap at someone...but I hate feeling the fool.

Miss Manners usually suggests a simple "Excuse me?" Perhaps with a raised eyebrow.

I find that many rude and/or obnoxious people like to be that way because they like arguing. In such cases, I find it satisfying to just smile and (somewhat sarcastically) say things like "you have a good day now". It tends to frustrate them and gets them flustered.

Sometimes being polite back is the nastiest thing to do. Rude people do not know what to make of politeness.
