How is dinner at Chef Mickey's?

OK, I tried doing a search and weeding through the trip reports and dining reviews, but we go in May and I simply don't have time to get through it all!!

Can anyone tell me how the food is at Chef Mickey's for dinner? I know general consensus is that CM's is loud, but how is the food? I wouldn't be concerned at all if it were breakfast - it's hard to really screw up bacon and eggs to the point of being inedible (though I've seen it done) - but dinner is a little more involved and can go either way. Plus, it's the first meal of our trip and I want it to be a good one!

All comments welcome! Thanks!

My family loves it and there are tastes for everyone. The food is always fresh and well stocked at the buffet. The dessert buffet is beyond fantastic. While it is loud, it's Disney World. We have had my son's Birthday Dinner there the last 2 years and we are going there twice on our trip next year!

My family enjoyed the dinner. Lots of variety. The mashed potatoes were particularly yummy. I can't remember everything we ate, but do remember no one complained about any of the food, which is unusual with my kids.

We also really enjoyed the food. I loved the ravioli, the mashed potatoes and especially the salad bar. And whoever said the dessert bar is awesome is so totally right! Its one of our must do favorites from now on.

Chef Mickeys is one of our favorite places to eat. If you want to know what some of the foods are that are served check out www.allears.net under dining hotels Contemporary. They have a pretty complete list of whats offered on the buffet.

I hate to be voice of dissention....

but hubby and I tried it in May 2009 and we did not enjoy it. The food was just off [everything but the mashed potatoes] Maybe it was an off night but the food was just not good. The character interaction was wonderful though.

I like the dinner there much better than the breakfast, although my kids love any buffet breakfast with pastries

We are doing breakfast AND dinner at Chef Mickey's in Feb. in honor of staying at BLT

I'm glad to read all the positive reviews! My sister and I were trying to figure out which resort restaurant to go to dinner on our day of arrival, and we agreed that the kids (her two girls, ages 6 and 9 and my two boys, ages 3 and 5) would love it there, and it would be a great way to start off the trip in "full-swing" with a nice loud character meal! I know, many people do not like the noise, but with small children we are so used to it. DH and I went to Chef Mickey's for breakfast with our boys on our last trip and we all loved it. Looking forward to dinner, especially since my parents will also be with us and they love to watch their grandchildren having so much fun! They had a blast at the character dinner at Sesame Place this past summer, and that one didn't even compare to any character meal I have been to at WDW!

Something else DDs loved was seeing the monorail go in and out. DD5 kept announcing them... Look Mom, the red monorail is here! Look Mom, the green monorail is here! Look Mom, the red monorail is going! Look Mom, the green monorail is going! So we made fun of her the whole week whenever we saw a monorail. Look El, the blue monorail is going! Look El.... By the end of the trip people we had gotten to know were telling her too!

I agree.

We go there every year for my dd's birthday. This was year 6. It was awful!!! It seems to be slipping every year. Prime rib was either raw or burnt - no inbetween. All of the food was just not good. Service was HORRIBLE!!! No where near my expectations for the price paid. We will not be returning there next year for her birthday - it was so bad, she even said she wants to go somewhere else!

My mom and I ate here in February, and were pleasantly surprised at the quality and freshness of the food. We ate at A LOT of buffets, and this was, by far, the best! I wouldn't hesitate to go again - good ravioli, mashed potatoes, and prime rib!

1) Remember, you are paying for characters, not great food.
2) The food is tasty and good, but not great.

Agreed! We like both the food and the atmosphere at Garden Grill in EPCOT - its Mickey with Chip and Dale. But the characters at GG are dressed in farm-themed overalls, etc. instead of their traditional clothes, so that might make a difference to you. In any event, Chef Mickey's is really fun! If you haven't been there before, I'd say definitely try it!
