Linked Reservations and Cancelation

Does anything bad happen if one of the linked reservations cancels? Is there any benefit to linking reservations a year out?

I think there are two types of linked reservations. One where both reservations are fully linked, so that one cabin can make excursion, Palo and SPA reservations for folks in any linked cabins (and take financial responsibility for them if desired) and another way where you link them only for dining purposes. Many folks like to hold off on fully linking (except with kids) as in the above scenario until after you make excursions and other reservations, because only one of the linked reservations can be accessed at a time.

The biggest benefit to linking reservations for us has always been for getting a party who booked late priority to clear the waitlist for main dining so they could dine with us, and for booking a large table for a Palo meal. Also, in some cases my friends haven't been able to go online when bookings first open for Palo, etc, and having the reservations linked enabled me to book their excursions, etc. for them.

Personally, I'd probably hold off until you're closer to the date.

I don't think there's any negative impact of a linked reservation canceling, unless you're within the booking window for excursions, Palo, etc, and they've booked some things for you.

It does take some effort to "unlink" reservations once they're linked. We previously booked two rooms for a cruise and those reservations were linked. We later moved one reservation to one date, and moved the second reservation to a second date. Each reservation still had a note that it was linked to the other though they were now on two separate sailing dates!

If you are doing what a CM called "cross referenced for dining," there is no point in doing this more than a month ahead.

If you are traveling with another party and want to be in cabins near each other, schedule reservations, etc. then you'll want to be linked before those dates come up.

No,it's no problem to cancel one of a pair of linked ressies although (as pp noted), you may end up with a "we're linked" note on your ressie despite the other party being on a different sailing. That must drive them crazy! That's another reason to NOT link until you know that you'll both be there.

When I call and ask - how do I specify one over the other. I currently have one reservation that when I made it I asked to be linked to another couple I was never asked is this for dining or other.

What happens when one party is in a CAT 8 or 9 and the other is in a CAT 1 or 2? can you still 'link' them?

You can link reservations of any category. Normally if a TA makes reservations for members of the same family she will automatically link them.

When I want to sit with another group at dinner, that's what I tell the CM--that's when I heard the term "cross referenced for dining." If you tell DCL that you want to be linked, that's what they'll do...so you'll be able to see each others scheduled activities, etc.
